Also near 2013 was when smartphones reached 50% universally of the market sales in the US. Meaning that's when kids started getting them.

the cause is not social media, haidt is extrapolating this conclusion out of nothing but projecting his own thoughts onto two data sets
it is increased social alienation due to structural factors before its existence and the destigmatization of mental health issues in western society (and I think mr. haidt is not a fan of discussing structural issues that may criticize liberal bourgeois norms which he helps maintain, considering his connections to silicon valley, IDW, etc.)
ill concede that social media may have accelerated this alienation by keeping social interactions confined, but it is not the cause

Social isolation is a correlation but not a causation. Social media is quite frankly the causation of this epidemic. Go read "Coddling of the American Mind" and "iGeneration" by Jean Twenge. Although not all of it is probably correct, most of it is.
