I think the thing that gets most people caught up is the fact that games are more easily cross-gen now because the ps4 and 5 share the same architecture basically being PC’s where as previously when making games for the 4 you either had to have an entire separate team to make the 3 version or skip it altogether.

This is gonna be the new norm though because ps6 games will surely have ps5 versions too now that Sony standardized their architecture. The ps3 was a whacky ass machine from a technical standpoint.

Feel biggest reason that happened was because of covid and publishers/developers wanting to make more money

COVID definitely played a role in encouraging support for the old gen since nobody could get a 5. But I still think the biggest factor is that the 5 is built the same as a 4 but with upgraded parts, so when you make a game you’re making it compatible with both systems automatically, and you just downgrade graphics/frame-rate for the 4 version.

The 6/5 era will be exactly the same because they learned their lesson of making standardized gaming system architecture and not getting cute with the design.

I'd credit the series S the most, a s***ty piece of hardware that Microsoft forces devs to make games for. Might as well be doing the prior gen too at that point

I don't think it'll be as late of the cross gen stuff though. If rumors are true that Microsoft is just gonna make a PC rig essentially on some alienware s***, next generation might go for $600-800 at launch

Xbox has a totally different gameplan for sure. They just want to get as many people in their “ecosystem” as they can, so they made a bootleg version of their new console.

The concept is the same from a game standpoint though. If you develop a game for the Series X the game will automatically work for the Series S but with downscaled assets/benchmarks.

The reason there was a big cut-off between the ps3/ps4 was because developing a game for the 4 meant it wouldn’t work on the 3 unless you dedicated resources specifically to adapt the game code to run on the 3’s complex processor architecture. PlayStation 4/5/6 will all have the same basic processing build because they’re just mini PC’s but with upgraded parts for the newer consoles.

  • tbh, the only reason I'd buy a PS5 is to play those "next gen" games my laptop can't run (it's about on par with a base PS4)

but like...the only next gen games I want is GTA VI, Tekken, and Spider-Man, so I can wait a lil.

The things people pretend to care about.. nobody care but any of those 2024 xbox games

on one hand, the oblivion remaster looks nice

on the other, i can just mod it on my PC so it can "look/run" better lmao

I used to think this same exact way my whole life lmao. Not even mad at this rationale cause it helped me cope through early adulthood when I couldn’t afford a decent machine yet. All my friends had moved on to PC and I was salty as hell

Could preach more but anyway salute to console gang cause that’s my alma mater. I still play with controller on PC
