My perception was people turned on him the second that promo dropped. It didn’t help that the music wasn’t up to snuff but the turning point was that promo, and how out of step it was with the times.

Imo part of why the album flopped was the tone deaf rollout along with the music. But i think people went in with no good will after that promo

This all started with the reception to Man of the Woods tbh and because of that, people brought up the Janet incident and it snowballed from there

I vividly remember the turn on him happening prior to the release of Man of the Woods.

In the January leading up to that album, Twitter brought up the Janet situation again since JT was headlining the Super Bowl the next month, then the country promo for the album dropped, then the album released and was a swing and a miss.

I think what really sparked the whole thing was him being booked for the 2018 Super Bowl. If that doesn’t happen, I don’t think the Janet incident rises to the surface the same way it did that month

A few reasons I can think of

1. This is no longer the age of traditional media, so they can't force feed us white artists that borrow heavily from black culture without audiences providing context and critique.

2. Britney Spears drama

3. The Black community might never forgive him for Janet Jackson.

Personally, I don't like him because he was talking sideways to Prince.

Man Of The Woods is definitely one of the worst albums of the 2010s by a notable name

deserves to be down there with Revival and Big Day

Crazy these all came out in consecutive years
