i fl that.... it defs is a high risk operation but you can try using a pan lid as a shield
still wont be fully protected, but better

and rather than dropping things down into the oil, either lay them down away from you or use a slotted spoon, fly strainer, tongs, long chopsticks, etc etc 2 gently lower stuff

Those are good ideas but i don't even like ovens because they are hot and scary
