Was thinking about this and how the blog era died around the same time, the fakeshoredrives, 2dopeboyz,etc
Chance blew up in that era, and I can’t figure out if his disastrous album was the final nail in the coffin in turning public opinion against that subgenre
OR
Was the genre already on it’s deathbed and the fading popularity made a return to form that much more difficult for him?
Thoughts?
Nah that album was trash
At that point he had done enough to really breakthrough so the blog era dying didn’t impact him as much as others
He just dropped the ball imo

I agree with this take. You need more good-great projects that solidify you as an artist before you drop The Big Day. I think if he pulled an Eminem and dropped a better project soon afterwards he'd still be a name people look forward to hearing from. But instead he just found his niche being lame on Twitter
Definitely both. The album was trash but also in 2019 Durk, DaBaby, Polo G and YSL music was the sound taking over

Fair take
I may have my timelines messed up but it feels like rap did take a pivot back to a darker and more aggressive sound after that, which would make sense all things considered
No he just dropped a mid ass album and never recovered
For sure, him cursing out his fans and telling them to eat a d*** didnt help

The way he responded to criticism after the album reaction showed me he couldn’t handle moving under pressure and that he just lame as hell. He shoulda took that L and refocused back up and came correct in summer 2020. The only reason the hate was so bad is because we waited 3 YEARS for this

Pretty much this
He’s one of the few artist you can directly pin point where his fall off was since it was so quick and dramatic
y’all think he can bounce back?
I kinda have a feeling he was never really as creative as he seemed. like, ppl around him were helping a lot and they’re either gone or doing their own thing now.
Nope just the album being bad
A lot of artists popular rn are from the blog era and a lot of artists from the blog era are looked at fondly today
Chance completely changed his sound and that's what made a lot of ppl switch over

It's mind boggling how bad this album is like did no one tell him before release? Or did he just not listen
It's not even an artistic risk he legit tried to make Billboard hits
It started back In 2017/2018 when people started getting tired of the goody 2 shoes shtick. And then he started lashing out at fans and being a complete d***head on Twitter, furthering people’s dislike for him.
And then the album in 2019 was the final straw for people. Him waiting 3 years to follow up Coloring Book with a pile of s*** was the biggest mistake he could’ve made.

what’s crazy is we’re about to reach the same amount of time between CB and TBD, as TBD - present
The album and how he handled the backlash is what killed his career.
Had he just taken the L and worked on a follow up that was better, the public would’ve forgave him.

Tbh I think the main issue is that the album was tooooo long. I think if this project was cut down to 40-45 minutes nobody would of trashed it. Atleast not as bad as they do now

His best move at this point is stick to his friends and close collaborations Smino, Noname, Saba, Towkio etc. and just make chill music it would feel more authentic

The fact Chance didn’t drop another album 6 months-a year after The Big Day was probably another fatal mistake.
Chance can be in denial all he wants about his album being trash, but him failing to sell out arenas when he was doing it with ease during the Coloring Book era speaks for itself.
