The way he responded to criticism after the album reaction showed me he couldn’t handle moving under pressure and that he just lame as hell. He shoulda took that L and refocused back up and came correct in summer 2020. The only reason the hate was so bad is because we waited 3 YEARS for this

Very true, I think it put a dent in his choir boy image and like anything else on the internet: if you feed into it people will just go at you harder

Im also surprised taht someone like him didnt have better media training.

    Nah that album was trash

At that point he had done enough to really breakthrough so the blog era dying didn’t impact him as much as others

He just dropped the ball imo

Niggas will try anything but accept that chance put some stupid s*** out and nobody was rockin with it

y’all think he can bounce back?

I kinda have a feeling he was never really as creative as he seemed. like, ppl around him were helping a lot and they’re either gone or doing their own thing now.

    no

I don’t know if theres a market for his style of music right now

But everything goes in cycles right, music trends included

You can live with a dud after your first 2 albums, but those first 2 HAVE to come correct.

Wasn’t just your average dud though, it was one of the worst albums I’ve heard in years.

Nope just the album being bad

A lot of artists popular rn are from the blog era and a lot of artists from the blog era are looked at fondly today

Chance completely changed his sound and that's what made a lot of ppl switch over

Good point. Even irrelevant artists from that era have good will and nostalgia

Plenty of others have had albums deemed that bad and still be able to bounce back. People just acting like it’s impossible for him

Nah they’re both really good projects still, especially Acid Rap.

    WESLEY THE GREAT

It started back In 2017/2018 when people started getting tired of the goody 2 shoes shtick. And then he started lashing out at fans and being a complete d***head on Twitter, furthering people’s dislike for him.

And then the album in 2019 was the final straw for people. Him waiting 3 years to follow up Coloring Book with a pile of s*** was the biggest mistake he could’ve made.

    I agree with this take

    Re: good 2 shoes:

Am I accurate in thinking happy rap as a whole fell off? I mean bubble gum Yachty era, dram/shelly , chance

Seems like that entire wave died a death (props to Yachty for reinventing himself with his Detroit style)

idk man. he’s inactive also and handled it really poorly and cringily.

and even Coloring Book, while kinda enjoyable, was just him stealing sounds from his features and getting washed by them at the same time.

so I think the doubt is justified.

Was thinking about this and how the blog era died around the same time, the fakeshoredrives, 2dopeboyz,etc

Chance blew up in that era, and I can’t figure out if his disastrous album was the final nail in the coffin in turning public opinion against that subgenre

    OR

Was the genre already on it’s deathbed and the fading popularity made a return to form that much more difficult for him?

    Thoughts?

Chance got popular off of his unique style, his incredible beat selection and his charming personality.

Coloring book proved chance could maintain his style while also appealing to the mainstream, as long as he kept the charming persona up.

What really killed chance wasent just a bad record (SB2H didn't kill Cudi's career), it was his arrogance about how dogshit his record was. He took all the criticism personally, hopped online to insult fans who were disappointed with his project, then blamed his long term manager for the album's disastrous reception.

Chance didn't lose a career to a changing sound and environment. Chance killed his career by acting like a self righteous d*** over his awful album.
