can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning
The revisionist history on both drake and Kanye is crazy. Drake was not as culturally important or thought of as some cool rapper until about 2017-2018. If you were around in those early years--Drake was roasted all the time.
"Drake the type.." memes were all over the place. People made fun of his white rapping voice. His singing songs were 10x more popular than any rap songs he put out. Stupid f***ing quotes would get pasted onto a Drake photo and go viral just cause people believed he said these things
around IYRT + Meek beef things started to flip and then on Scorpion he truly shed those early narratives.
On the other hand--Kanye was so hot he could sell a piece of plastic back then and it would become the hottest accessory lol I always thought the Adidas clothes/shoes were ugly but the people LOVED everything he put out lol not even mentioning the music. He had a ton of incidents but was bullet proof--until the MAGA hat in 2018. I'd say 2018 was officially the year they switched places and Kanye became the one to make fun of while Drake fully captured the youth/culture
The people defending Yeezus being a culturally accepted time for Ye have to either be white or just wasn’t there lmaoo the hood/streets were not rocking with Yeezus like that at all. It wasn’t until recent that the album has been universally praised.
Nobody is talking about the artistic value but Ye as a whole was kind of put on the back burner.
Mfs in REAL LIFE were even saying Born Sinner was better than Yeezus back then. I was one of the few people singing the album’s praises in my circles.
Yeezus era literally birthed the “I miss the old Kanye talks”
I don’t know man. I don’t f***ing know. F***. I’m sorry.

I don’t think anybody believes Yeezus was “culturally accepted” or universally acclaimed at the time. Yeezus did however create some huge cultural moments for Ye and that’s undeniable.
The lady Gaga Polaroid clip gotta be one of the most famous interview clips of all time
Well tbf Kanye debuted older tho this was 11 years into his career 11 years into Drake’s career is like 2019/2020
I can’t tell cause tidal exclusive ruined the entire rollout and we will never really know how big the album would be first week
Fr, I literally tried buying the album and it wouldn't let me
I think it woulda been 500k tho fw
Since you said culturally and not commercially, absolutely.
TLOP era Kanye had the culture in the palm of his hand in 2016 from the album itself, the tour, the merch, and the shoes. So many of Ye's Gen Z fanbase grew off of this album.
And so many moments off the album like the I Love Kanye skit, his rapping on NMPIL/Saint Pablo, the meme lines off of FSMH/Wolves, the Fade music video, and the beef with Taylor on Famous were huge iconic moments.
Drake at 38 is technically commercially hotter but, outside of Nokia, it seems like his current music isn't making any real dent in hip hop culture. And, hell, even Nokia is technically an R&B/Atlanta Bass joint and not a rap one.
The Iceman rollout seems cold(no pun) though. And the lawsuit loss made it even colder. But I have no doubt that Iceman could still do pretty decent numbers just off of Drake's name alone.
There's no telling how much TLOP would've sold if it wasn't a Tidal exclusive or had physicals available though. Hell, imagine if Kanye attached 45Seconds to TLOP like Drake attached Hotline Bling to Views, TLOP could've done Grad numbers lol.
Crazy to think Ye changed so much since then that TLOP feels like an "old Kanye" album despite having a skit about people missing the "old Kanye." Go figure.
Drake is fundamentally not an artist, He does not express himself, he expresses what he views as popular or what is current in his lyrics, song structure and vibe. Take care was his best album and it's The Weeknd's illegimate child. even So far gone and before is a copy of 808s and heartbreak
Drake's talent for music is in his business, showmanship and performative arts, He knows how to work in the system because he was a child actor, groomed into an industry. That is fine, curation is a field of work and specialized interest.
It is just laughable to compare him to the Kendricks,Kanye's,Basquiat's s*** even Jay Z.
He is more akin to a very intelligent sociopathic DJ Khaled. Just instead of yelling DJ Khalleeeed. He raps one of his verses of the backs of whatever sound he thinks will be popular
The concept of someone comparing Drake to Basquiat
