Seeing where Jay and Ye where at those ages really just makes me feel like Drake career arc was ass on the backend
Hov was in American Gangster era at 38 and Ye was in TLOP era, Drake needs a major course correction asap or he’s gonna start looking real mid legacy wise outside his prime 09’-15’ run
You’re wrong about TLOP. I was in high school when that dropped. Everyone was on that. It wasn’t just music fans and white kids. My school was mostly black and Spanish
I feel crazy reading this thread
it was a massive album all year in spite of the tidal s***
Most bootlegged album ever or some s*** too right?
No he wasn’t. TLOP was big for music fans and white male kids but was niche in the greater culture. It’s only very specific people who listened to that. LR to Graduation fame was about 20 times bigger. Unless we’re strictly talking about kardashian and trump headlines that didn’t translate to ye’s music.
:zucclaff: couldn’t have your finger less on the pulse

Yep, most illegally downloaded album of all time. 500K downloads within days

Why does no one remember Drake at 38 is 15 years into his career and had to go against hov and ye when I was 25
Yep, most illegally downloaded album of all time. 500K downloads within days
Maybe it's bc I was 14 at the time but idk man that s*** was so huge at the time
The merch, the tour, the yeezys, the msg livestream etc it was all so ubiquitous
Literally every fast fashion brand rushed to try to get their own bootleg Pablo merch out that spring

It was a huge cultural moment. Anyone denying that either wasn’t there or is extremely out of touch

2words you never hear.... Wayne quit

Literally if you don't know you're either too young or too old lol
2014-2016 ye was the most universally liked he'd been since like, the dropout trilogy? And I barely know bc I was 6 when grad dropped lol
Drake is fundamentally not an artist, He does not express himself, he expresses what he views as popular or what is current in his lyrics, song structure and vibe. Take care was his best album and it's The Weeknd's illegimate child. even So far gone and before is a copy of 808s and heartbreak
Drake's talent for music is in his business, showmanship and performative arts, He knows how to work in the system because he was a child actor, groomed into an industry. That is fine, curation is a field of work and specialized interest.
It is just laughable to compare him to the Kendricks,Kanye's,Basquiat's s*** even Jay Z.
He is more akin to a very intelligent sociopathic DJ Khaled. Just instead of yelling DJ Khalleeeed. He raps one of his verses of the backs of whatever sound he thinks will be popular
💯

It’s more than just the backend bruh. His last classic album was IYRTITL (and idk if I even consider that a classic).
Over half his career been ass compared to Kanye and Kendrick’s legendary careers
Everyone wanted to dress and be like Kanye at the time. Only corny guys ever wanted to be like Drake
TLOP was awful. It is the star wars prequels of Albums. even has the latter adjustments, a small tease of being a pinch of the past but ultimately being a vanity project by an out of touch narcissist
Album that turned me off kanye and made me realise hes turned into an elon musk type
The branding of him as a genius with unlimited potential is more important than his actual output
„It was also the year he realized how much fame and attention he gains from fully vulnerably crashing out.“
Thats not really true. In 2016 he was d***ged out, paranoid and his mental illness got way worse. He realized it in 2018 and thats one of the reason why he stopped taking his meds.
Ehhh
I’d say it started at yeezus. Think of it like this
Kanye was a kid that studied for every test, the first time he didn’t study he still got a perfect score. Yeezus was his first last min album, he recorded all the vocals on a private plane ride in like 3 hours
TLOP was the first time Kanye figured out that public spectacle leading up to the album worked. They didn’t even have a cover for Pablo until the day of, the constant updating of the note sheet. The twitter arguments, and Yeezy season 3 and another critically acclaimed album (he got a 9.3 or 9.0 from pitchfork following up the 9.5 from Yeezus) like we basically allowed him to get another 100 without studying
Then the fall really started

Nothing you said pertains to culture. Drake had big buzz but he wasn't a culture shifter or a "cool" rapper until the second half of the 10s. He was the hook guy in the early 10s that had credibility due to hanging around and being cosigned by prime Wayne.
But you didn't see people dressing like Drake, wanting to be Drake, media praising Drakes albums etc... the influence wasn't there. People felt very comfortable disrespecting Drake. "Drake doesn't have a classic" was a very common thought on the internet, especially on KTT1. It isn't until the last 5-7 years that people have gone back and declared some of his earlier albums classics.
Hell I still have this gif from back in the day--and this was 2017ish so even by that time KTT1 was debating whether he had a classic album

I’m coming back to this because before views drake was relatively a critically acclaimed artist
Funniest part about it is that despite the drake the type of jokes, you’re essentially describing who Jay z was
I’m more mad at Drake he gave a bunch of loser ass niggas ammo brah
Why does no one remember Drake at 38 is 15 years into his career and had to go against hov and ye when I was 25
Ye was 13 years in. 2 years isn't that big of a difference lol
TLOP was culturally huge. I was 25 when it dropped and locked into my own grind at the time, but gen Z looks back on that album super fondly.
My roommate is 26 and doesn’t f*** with Kanye in general, but she has all of TLOP on her playlists and treats it (along with DAMN) like the greatest rap music ever made. There’s rateyourmusic user data on this stuff and it’s the younger gen pushing that album on there. My students aged 15-16 mostly talk about Graduation, TLOP and Donda when it comes to Kanye.
It seems like if you were coming of age around 2016, TLOP is gonna be one of your all time favorites.

808s was made in 3 weeks. Yeezus was prob worked on longer all things considered ngl
Don't do that people are still ripping off Black Skinhead & On Sight. There would be no Motomami without Yeezus either, fact
there wouldn’t be Brat without Yeezus either
Nah I can’t fully agree with this. TLOP was definitely more loved than WTT.
Man idk lol like it in hindsight yes but you could not play much of TLOP for the hoes lmfao I remember that s*** distinctively. ANTI got more universal love than TLOP. S*** even Views did somehow
