in the moment damn getting the pulitizer was a consolation for missing out on giving it to him for gkmc and tpab, but in retrospect it might be his most subtle and tragic album, theres really a lot of nuance, substance, and vivid imagery in the storytelling there thats worthy of the prize
My favorite album of his for that reason. Truly a masterpiece
I also think we as consumers do too much of a comparison to an artist’s previous works when reviewing albums and don’t allow projects to simply stand on its own
this is true too. i remember @RVI told me that Bowie said that we should evaluate albums individually instead of comparing them to one another, it was especially apt for Bowie since he typically tethered an alter ego or a persona to each project that was completely different from one another
i find myself comparing a lot anyways though but it’s def a habit worth breaking, encourages a more in-depth listen

I’m so upset you fell for this
Idk but the album no one apparently heard was 3times plat and had a few top 10 songs before the beef war happened

yeah i think its a balance between evaluating them individually and still letting them combine to contribute to the idea of the artist as a whole
like I personally like to think of it as judging all the works individually but using an artist's entire oevre to judge our opinion of them as a whole. also thinking of the works as building on each other and not necessarily taking anything away from other works
those were bots but the initial reaction was very real, a lot of people still feel a way about it as evidenced itt. i think it’s still some of his best material ever and anyone that calls it mid or bad without engaging w what it’s about (and even when some of yall do engage with it …) i look at as silly but -
you do have to realize that he was coming off a several year mainstream run with #1 singles, iconic videos and a feature run working with the likes of Future, Rich the Kid, and later Baby Keem. i think people were just expecting something more like Damn and when you hear Worldwide Steppers for the first time you realize that you’re not getting what you thought you were at all. for a lot of people that alone can ruin an experience, esp in todays culture where everyone feels like they need to have a tweetable take immediately. he just didn’t go in a direction i think anyone was expecting him to

I think it’s natural to compare especially because artists on the same level as Kendrick usually deliver such landmark albums. But I personally try to treat each albums as you mentioned with Bowie. Different eras and almost different “egos”
I could never view Morale the same way I view TPAB or DAMN. Or even GKMC because the same way I’m in a different space in my life so is the artist. Especially an album as heavy as Morale.

nah i dont remember, there was also a quote (maybe multiple) from Zappa on his 'big note' type idea for the whole discography part too. dont really remember which

I will say on a lyrical level, THP5 is better than nearly every song on Morale. And that Marvin sample and production is so good
Heart Pt5 coming out before Morale did it no favors. that track and music video had more impact than the album that week.
At least almost every song on Damn was more exciting than HeartPt4
