Easily but there's still good music out if you know where to look.

so glad to see other people ITT acknowledge this actually

some of it must be nostalgia, but i really do think the music was better then, as was the way the culture was mediated by blogs instead of social media

generally speaking, the effort put into rap songs has declined year-after-year - it's become really obvious lately. just look at Ye's latest work, for example. and he's still considered a visionary in music.

    That's a decline

Literally anything is a drop off compared to TPAB. It’s one of the greatest albums of all time. DAMN. is still a very high quality album, and a classic.

    He never “declined”

What point are we saying begins the current era?

2014. I always say the blog/tumblr era could have continued had the next big stars dropped in 2014 (rocky, joey, pink slime album, kendrick, etc) but none of those guys did so that made room for the underground trap artists to drop (thug, travis, etc)

  • Dec 6, 2020

Rocky was part of that whole wave who blew up from the underground; he just went super mainstream while his blog contemporaries like SGP never made it into the spotlight quite like he did

Rocky Joey and Kendrick might not be straight up “blog rappers” but they were at the tail end of that movement

    Agreed

Kendrick especially was revered by blogs like 2dbz

They were at the tail end of the movement fam. You can argue that Rocky had ties to the blogs cause 2DopeBoyz and all of them wrote about him and the mob lol the drastic change came when the entire sound of hip hop switched to trap.

  • Dec 6, 2020

Idk guys I think nostalgia is playing allot into this

But allot of the current sounds had originated during that time period & it was the biggest artists of today’s beginning, like Drake Cole Kendrick Rocky etc etc.
