The fact the hood dictates the black experience is crazy. Rich successful non impoverished black folk experience the same level of otherization and low expectations all black folk experience a suit or money ain't changing that. I get what you're saying but the idea that poverty or hood experiences make you black. Is the literal propaganda I just thought hip hop had grown past this by now considering all the rap artists we've had this decade that do not fit the typical mold of blackness or rapper asthetic. In my view of real life and hip hop s*** a lot of people have fam or friends or xp related to the "streets" you wouldn't think did. The world is a big place, bigger than any one city or hood black experience.
Stop defending the Canadian culture vulture who deliberately exploits black culture for his own gain while giving nothing back.
Good post.
I still think Drake was laying it on a little thick on songs like Mob Ties, where he’s certainly cosplaying a mob boss, but it is true that a lot of masculine s*** isn’t inherently street.
I mean just look at Eminem: he’s never been street at all, but his early music SCREAMED “if you push me I will crash out on you.” Sometimes that’s just how someone is
But even that to extent really isn’t “cosplaying” if he really got ties though lol
That song came out in 2018, he’s been signed to cash money, a street label, since 09. He’s had people trying to bring him down this entire time and probably has people that want to take it a step further and harm him or his loved ones. He definitely probably got ties to the street for protection, again he doesn’t have to be FROM the hood to have those ties
The song is called Mob TIES, not Mob BOSS lol. He never claimed to be the boss of anything except for his crew
like who 😂 “underground” as in struggling to pass 50k views? sure
but as soon as ur a somebody people start reaching out for favours and certain love you show is interpreted as picking sides
Jazz Cartier?

You a Lil Wayne fan so you acting like Lil Wayne didn't tell Drake to NOT do like him is hilarious.
Worst Behavior video was shot in Memphis like he was in the streets or sumn
He was holding folks kids in the video like he was Pop Smoke
I see wat u tryna get at but nah foh, Drake def tried to gain that street image
Dope video. The Memphis part you just mentioned at 9:30

i hate to be the bearer of bad news but there are black people outside the united states
you think african american culture is the only black culture in the world? 😂
Good post.

who tf has drake crashed out on crodie?
a reference in a lyric does not mean he reps 3L 😂😂
i don’t think it’s fair for anyone who’s not from the city to try and dissect this they don’t have the context
here's the context
i hate to be the bearer of bad news but there are black people outside the united states

absolutely not. that would be ignorant.
but tell me why your hometown hero is calling toronto's black culture ignorant decades ago?
here's the context

😂😂😂 u think i haven’t seen this bro i’m pretty sure i’m the person who resurfaced this video 🤣
so explain the 180 then.
Brother I love you but Drake isn't doing anything that a lot of rappers do and to Drake's cred imo looking at the lyrics he has always maintained it's not me it's the homies. Like most rappers not in a gang or set. Drake alluding to anything is always Chubbs, Wassas, HA.
"To be real I never did one crime, but my brothers could never caption that line at all"
"To keep it real, I wasn't really gangster 'til now
I was livin' on a cloud, I was quiet as a mouse
I was in the club gettin' lost in the crowd
Wasn't doin' what I wanted to, I'd do what was allowed"
"If Chubbs has on a Chanel side bag, you don't wanna see him reach inside"
"Big '81, but I don't own a Harley I ride in Mercedes with Shane"
You gon make someone around catch a body like that
i hate to be the bearer of bad news but there are black people outside the united states
you think african american culture is the only black culture in the world? 😂
Then let Drake exploit those cultures, just leave black American culture alone. Okay?

Fair point.
I’m not really upset at him for it or anything, tbh, I like that song, I just think it still hits a weird note.
It’s hard for me to understand why, but it just feels like a strange choice for Drake to rap about that on a record.
Maybe I’m still just caught up in his old school image or something, idk. But I think he just has a hard time conveying the energy I associate with street s***.
I also don’t have a problem with people rapping about fictional things; so long as they aren’t claiming real world gangs or something stupid like that; if you wanna rap about killing people, then I won’t try to stop you. The thing for me though, is that I feel like you have to sound like you believe it yourself for the song to work as well as possible. And idk, when Drake raps about guns or having people knocked off or something, I feel like he knows he’s just talking.
But yeah, I know I’ve been clowning Drake these past few weeks for the beef stuff, but I do genuinely enjoy and respect his music, so it’s not me trying to get at him or anything.
Sorry for the novel length response, lol.
so explain the 180 then.
if you want to scroll up you can see it in my previous replies with another person, but i’ll reiterate here
toronto street politics are hard to avoid if you are a somebody in our cities scene
even our most wholesome artist who makes indie folk music about peace and religion has gun and assault charges, reps a set, and just recently had his brother killed in a targeted shooting
drake was a good yute for sure it’s clear he was not born into this life, but at some point during ur come up ur forced to do favours and hand outs that are interpreted by people as “picking sides” and that s*** snowballs as ur career develops
i don’t think he’s even that happy about it tbh (although s*** like “Mob Ties” and “Meltdown” say otherwise), it shows in his lyrics about smoke dawgs death
Then let Drake exploit those cultures, just leave black American culture alone. Okay?
post ur spotify wrapped
who tf has drake crashed out on crodie?
I don’t get that Eminem “crash out” vibe from Drake songs personally, and that’s why even when I like his more aggressive songs, I feel like they aren’t as good as they could be if he really believed it.
I was just saying that I agree that you don’t have to be street to be competitive, aggressive sometimes, etc.
But yeah, I don’t think Drake would ever go that far; which might be why those songs feel kinda hollow for me. Idk
here's the context
https://twitter.com/HipHopDX/status/1610848566712406016It is "ignorant" ?? that's just the reality. Doesn't make it wrong or bad but the way we talk in "urban" communities across the US (i know Toronto is in Canada) is ignorant.

1. thanks for the context
2. that's also not exclusive to toronto though, everyone has "street" backing. hell even Jack Harlow has street backing (wasn't his entourage behind a shooting at some club in Kentucky), hell the mob funded music way way way back
And maybe I'm bugging, but you can have street backing without claiming or name dropping gangs and sets within your raps or songs in general
It was shot in Memphis where his dad’s side of his family lives
Ask drake if he grew up with his dad

look at his entire discography, he makes music about his life and his experiences
he is genuinely friends with these people, you think he’s not gonna reference them in his music?
he’s literally known as the reference guy 😂 like that’s his thing
It is "ignorant" ?? that's just the reality. Doesn't make it wrong or bad but the way we talk in "urban" communities across the US (i know Toronto is in Canada) is ignorant.
its different when you say it around a bunch of non black ppl in a fancy restaurant like ur bougie
comes off as out of touch/racist

Maybe this is my old school system education kicking but I mean....usually if something is "ignorant" the context behind it is something that you wouldn't want to associate yourself with.
