I really don’t understand the whole “street facade” take at all

I posted this the other day but I’ll post this here again bc it’s relevant:

#1 most of the people who say this never seen the hood a day in they life

#2 He never lied about where he was from or his background or none of that. He never lied about being in the streets. And as someone who grew up in a household with a nigga who sold crack and also got in shootouts on the regular I will tell you this: hood niggas do not have a monopoly on masculinity. Half of the s*** yall think is hood s*** is actually just MAN s***. You don’t have to be from the hood to not take s*** from anyone and stand on business. You don’t have to be from the hood to be confident and competitive. You don’t have to be from the hood to be confrontational. You don’t have to be from the hood to own a gun and protect yourself and you certainly don’t have to be from the hood to have a crew that will crash out for you. That’s not hood s***, that’s man s***

Y’all think just bc he’s not “from the hood” he should be a soft spoken beta or something and it really just shows where y’all principles as men are at truth be told

The street facade killed Drake’s chances of being the true legend that his direct peer, Taylor Swift, eventually became - so no. Hotline Bling’s commercial/cultural peak and One Dance’s commercial peak are pre-thug Drake as well. Gods Plan, Nice For What and In My Feelings diverge from the newer thug-Drake model and more closely resemble old Drake musically and lyrically

he would’ve eventually been entangled in Toronto’s street politics whether he wanted it or not

it’s ridiculous out here, our most wholesome artist who makes conscious indie folk music about peace and religion has been charged several times with gun possession assault etc, and had his brother killed recently as a result of a targeted shooting

when you have that attention on you, it can’t be avoided, so it helps to make friends

Why are people only allowed to be associated with street s*** in childhood? He fell into that world the higher he rose in the rap game in his 20s. I don’t think it’s an act, he has power and connections. Not saying that lifestyle should be glamourised but why can’t he rap about it? Just because he didn’t grow up in that environment?

house split in two, his mom on 1st floor and him in the basement...helping his mom pay the bills / meds while making roughly 50k a year before taxes. He was upper lower class at best in a middle class neighborhood at best. Drake talks about this in multiple interviews including footage but because he wasn't homeless or living with the lights off while working since 14, go off.

Drake's level of street connection is the same as Kenny's from a public stand point, they both connected to "the homies" neither of them are in a gang. Kenny's fam being in (Bloods & Crips/ Chi Town Gangs) just makes him associated the same way Drake is associated with Wassas and Hell's Angel. Hip Hop not ready for the convo of how Hip Hop has been selling blackness, artists like Kenny biggest propagandists of "Blackness" which is political term used to divide white from black full f***ing stop. But yeah the guy saying "To be real, man, I never did one crime. But none of my brothers could caption that line." Not anti Kenny just being honest about a convo Hip Hop is not politically aware enough to have. To worried about Blackness. Just my thoughts.

lol I wouldn't call Mustafa wholesome per se but I get wym.

There are tons of underground rappers in Toronto who don't get caught up in street s***. Unfortunately for Mustafa, that was the environment he grew up in.
