To show off the power they had
To crush japan in two strokes without risking american lives.

I'm not for dropping the bombs just guessing.

Remember, Imperial Japan was very traditional based on Code of Bushido. They fight until they die.

You gotta know what the leaders were thinking at the time to give a decent opinion to this question.

They being said, I wonder if dropping the bomb on the coast of the two cities would have the same effect

Fighting on/in japan territory would have been like Vietnam.

What was the US’ reason for dropping it? Was there ever a concrete reason?

The official history is that America was concerned about the potential loss of life that would occur if they did a full-scale invasion of the Japanese mainland. Estimates (true or not) said there would be about 1,000,000 casualties. These estimates were seemingly based on theories about the average Japanese civilian’s willingness to defend their country should an invasion occur

The reality is that Japan was desperately looking to surrender. That, and between the first and second atomic bombings, the Soviet Union had declared war on Japan and was mobilizing a force to invade japanese-occupied Manchuria and Japan. Japan was done for.

But one of the biggest factors always weighing on a president is their image in the face of global public opinion. If Truman hadn’t dropped the bomb then Americans would be outraged if even 1 more American had to die while we had atomic capability. That, and Americans virulently hated the Japanese because of Pearl Harbor and propaganda. Truman had an upcoming election to win!! and like 90% of Americans supported the decision

IMO, the bombs could’ve been used in a demonstration or not been aimed at civilian targets. for previous conventional bombings (Tokyo, etc) of Japan the Americans preemptively dropped leaflets warning of the incoming bombs but no such warning was given for the nukes.

Many theorize that the bombs had nothing at all to do with defeating Japan but instead was supposed to be the first threat to Stalin in the upcoming Cold War against the USSR which Truman had foreseen

Yeah until US come closer to Japan from Saipan, Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa. It’s all total war. Also, Japanese pilots developed kamikaze around 1944 for suicidal attacks to our ships.

  • Aug 6, 2020

wasn’t even necessary, russian forces gained entry into japan

  • Aug 6, 2020

When Truman was VP he floated the idea to FDR of aiding the Nazis to prolong their war on the eastern front against the Soviets in order to grind them both down

People try to say the bombings were retaliation for pearl harbor but I cant accept that. Thats like someone punching you in the ribs and you drop a car on top of them. Both cheap shots for sure (not getting into the conspiracy that the US knew the attack was coming) but they were not equal shots imo.

I agree. They knew a bit before the attack from a radar operator but who knows? I think the Doolittle Raids can be first retaliation against Japan after the attack.

Bruh I ain't know you to be a WOAT poster like this

Eh it’s not a great thing that happened but at the same time Japan bombed the f*** out of US, was committing quite the genocide & mass rape (google is your friend) among its own with no signs of slowing down.

Hell the bomb prob influenced them to stop fighting but they still fought for about another month (soviet union invasion).

Alternative is what? Full scale land invasion? Cost more US lives? It’s sad but life isn’t easy or fair.

It’s easy to sit behind a laptop or phone and criticize folks decisions during a world war 80 years ago. If it saved lives long term, it was the right move, but very sad imo.

  • Aug 6, 2020

Like I said from the post above, it’s tradition. They fight until they die honorably. You ever heard of the Bataan Death March?

this is classic 1940s racial theory thinking. Japan was desperate for an out. Blame the Emperor, not the generals or the people

Because I’m not for mass genocide for s***s and giggles like many Trump supporters/Nazis. I have the ability to see things are different in a f***ing global war after somebody bombed the f*** out of us😂

this was a really good answer from AskHistorians:

saying just "yes" or "no" is reductive. it doesn't inform anyone.

Hey man thanks for this. Good read
