As someone who grew up in Broward and was in middle school for X's come up I think X would of ended up being where Carti is now (numbers / influence wise) but tbh looking back a lot of that music is really weak and aged pretty poor

But at the same time who knows where he would of taken his sound he could of seriously developed similar to Carti but we'll never know

I think calling him a sc goat/goat of his era is entirely fair but he is absolutely not in the all time goat list

Personal opinion on his music aside:

he didn’t get the chance to live up to his potential but his impact + artistic growth from 2016-2018 was obvious. in his current form, he’s a mid-level, highly derivative SoundCloud rapper w/ some great ideas, yet poor execution on most of them

He had it. Everyone noticed. His peers, predecessors, and the artists who came up after his death. The “?” album defined an entire generation despite being essentially a bunch of demos put together

plus he was one of the only newer guys that actually cared about doing “rappity-rap” stuff. if he were alive today he’d be approaching 7 years in the mainstream, no doubt an older, more refined, and mature XXXTENTACION at 25 years old would’ve made something special by now

X, juice and pop smoke were the future, regardless of how we feel about the music they made while they were here
