This film is basically black magnolia. If you like that film this will be amazing
Actually never seen Magnolia smh. It’s the only PTA film I have yet to see
Just came back from seeing it. Gonna keep this short and say it's absolutely f***ing incredible and a must-watch. 99% confident it's going to be my favorite movie of the year next to The Last Black Man in San Francisco
This movie was mediocre at best. I felt like this movie didn’t really have a sense of direction. This movie heavenly relied on the soundtrack a lot of it was unneeded there was points where the movie needed to breath and speak for itself but it never did because the music would just come in. There was one point it felt like I was watching music video to blond, it felt like this movie was made by mtv and not a24. I was thinking this was gonna be like a more relatable easier to understand version of tree of life, but then it just turn into a teen movie real quick. The second half of the movie was better than the first. The best scene was when the daughter is talking to the dad.

I wouldn't say this movie is mediocre, but I do agree with you on the soundtrack. I felt like a lot of songs were not good selections and relied too heavily on them. Some songs didn't need to be there and it felt like the director just got his playlist and put it in the movie. But still, I very much enjoyed this movie tho. 8/10.
damn this got soundtrack of the year
Really? The songs felt random as hell tbh.
Cinematography was best of the year, acting was great from everyone. Only gripe I have is the writing but other than that the movie was hard af
Music felt a bit too on the nose at times but some choices worked very well.

only song choice that was kinda cringe to me was ifhy during the breakup scene
This movie made me happy that I’m no longer a teenager because that s*** is cringy as f***. And made me feel like I have a music taste of a teenager time to start listening more to slow dive and Grateful Dead
I really did not care for this. I thought it was aggressively off-putting and I thought Shults disappeared inside his own a****** trying to be Malick.
Also thought it was noticeably underwritten, which is why the style and editing choices were so aggressive.
Haven't cried this much in a theater before
Such a beautiful and resonating story
"I just want us to be a family again..."
This film is a perfect example of style reaching its maximum potential but falling flat in terms of substance.
1st half of this movie is so much more engaging than the 2nd half, The Place Beyond The Pines is a great body of work that shows how a two-part structure can work cohesively. So I wish that Shults could've took notes on what made TBTP work well as a two-part story.
I wish that Shults had a Black executive producer/writer who had a role in creative control, wouldn't be surprised that he had a ton of "Yes" men in his circle throughout production. It would've been great to have a Black mind throw in some direction for scenes that involved Tyler, Emily, and their parents.
It also could've been 15-20 minutes shorter, but I respect Shults for wanting an equal amount of time between Emily and Tyler's arcs.
Cinematography was lovely, but it did get hella repetitive at times with certain angles/pans being used. Kelvin Harrison Jr and Sterling K. Brown were excellent on-screen together. Soundtrack was solid, a few songs there-and-there that felt out of place.
There's a handful of missed opportunities that prevent this from being a classic, but it's an enjoyable piece of art that I wouldn't mind watching again.
8/10

Wholeheartedly agree with this.
He directed, written, and co-produced this flick.
My gut instincts are telling me that Shults had a huge influence towards this film.
