this cbdc discourse is just a repackaging of libertarian goldbug fears from the 80s and 90s

i don’t think physical cash will ever go away

I wouldn't say never. People have been trading away security/privacy for convenience for ages

Physical cash being removed from circulation entirely is a massive undertaking for sure, but I think it's gonna happen eventually

Wrong. Fintech has always existed. It's financial technology.

True, I mean the endless stream of "products" out of SF, NY and Miami funded by venture capital whose sole real purpose is taking cuts of transactions

I say this as someone who's career path will probably lead me to fintech

Branchless banking services, where you’ll deposit and withdraw money from a network of agents acting as banking agents. Goods and services will be paid from your phone with till numbers and pins.

A lot of “3rd world” countries are already pretty cashless and use this method as a norm. USA just gonna figure out a way to monetize it when in reality it should be a free service

Yeah this s*** is getting sad. Nobody wants to seek out information anymore they want it spoonfed to them.

That’s supposed to be the best thing about the internet. Having all of the information in the world at your disposal yet people choose to just listen to whatever they’re told by random ass blogs, tweets and tik toks.

When I saw people sharing the video of Terrence Howard explaining that 1x0=1 I pretty much gave up.

It's really becoming a worry. Have you taken a look at Reddit.com/r/Teachers? The majority of teachers posting on there say that the post-COVID crowd of kids are the worst students they've ever dealt with. Same goes for r/Professors too.

Misinformation has always been a thing associated with gullible people, but when something gets misquoted over and over because nobody even Googles it? Scary.

Also; would like to spot out that personally I am not just some old man yelling about 'kids', this is a genuine worry.

Oh, a lot of VC is just bs. If you look at a lot of startups/tech in general, they’re either copy/paste, don’t really have a use case/product market fit, or don’t have a business model that will ever make profit. Actually there’s a lot of folks saying that many public tech companies are doing funny money accounting to make it seem like they’re profitable when they actually aren’t.

People don’t understand how small things like this can snowball but it’s getting to the point that you could spread some really harmful ideas if you frame it the right way online.

    Not anytime near tho

Theres places in America aka a lot of the midwest and deep south that dont even have proper internet they literally use a hybrid system of dial-up that is exclusively for those areas by providers

Probably has to do with the tons of scamming & fairly known know how of f***ing with computers thay "a lot" of people will have.

Cash App, Pay Pal & credit cards get f***ed with so much already imagine being at an even bigger disadvantage.

The archaic security should be improved foremost before anyone starts thinking about all digital everything.

Or else scammers, hackers & people that do identity theft are going to have a field day for years.

Dial-up isn't widely used anymore, there's an article from 2013 that said only around ~3% of Americans still use it. 10 years later, it's probably not even 0.5%.

I said hybrid, calling it dial-up was a comparsion of how s*** and unreliable it is, i didnt mean literal dial up.

Its a fact a huge chunk of midwest and deep south internet infrastructure is so s*** that providers literally do unique services exclusive to them. Its so slow uploading and especially downloading. Its part of the reason console games still do CDs as well & why digital albums still exist. Its easier for those people and locales because of their terrible infrastructure. They're tech is very behind and on top of that they are just not in a well suited area. Theyre also the main ones that keep cable tv on life support, again cause their terrible set up and area where downloading and especially streaming is hard and takes forever.

And on top of that America's internet overall is pretty s*** compared to other 1st world countries because we literally have people that lobby to keep it s*** & stuck so they dont have to spend the moeny to re-do the overall general infrastructure because "its good enough".

My overall point was that we cant even get our overall internet decent, everywhere and secured let alone a one way money system. Which those people are still going to need to depend on physical money for a long time.

Oh okay, yeah that's understandable. To be fair: not everywhere necessarily needs access to internet, and personally as someone currently pursuing IT in school it feels great to be 'off the grid'. It grounds you back into reality pretty fast. You are correct though, there is a digital divide in a good portion of this country. Although smartphones and internet access is pretty much solidly everywhere at this point.
