hmm I understand where your coming from but they both never exclusively never catered to black audiences or R&B. This does happen often, Usher and maybe Neyo are better examplesI can think of off the top of my head. Where they gained a following from a black crowd and experimented and released music that abandoned their fanbasee.
They don't even realize that the primary reason they listen to Weeknd and Frank Ocean is because both artists experiment intensively with other genres that dilutes the traditional 'RnB' sound, which ironically makes them more palatable to non urban (white) audiences. It also explains this site dismissive attitude to more traditional RnB artists that don't stray away from the niche soundscapes.
