so yeah, there's this idea that there's not really much of a mainstream anymore. it's not just for music, but for tv and movies

and this idea is kinda old now, but it's kinda proving itself ever truer as time goes on

i came about it when breaking bad was airing its last season. and the author was saying that as big as the show seemed, it really was barely being watched by most people that watch tv. i think the most watched show airing at the same time was some bullshit like ncis. but it had like at least ten times as many viewers.

the thing was we've moved in society to basically consume ONLY what we wanna consume whenever we want. and so things that seem so widespread and universal are ...not.

there's a lot to it, but the main thing is that a lot of artists have realized you don't need to try to cast a big net anymore. it's not so much that you are going to convert casual listeners to become fans of you, but rather please/cater to your devoted fans so much that they will basically bring in newer fans.

anyway, sorry, that was more than you cared to read, but yeah. rivers should just do whatever he's excited about cause that'll probably give us his best work
