The song title is a reference to the show Cheers, for memory "Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine" was the final line in the show or something as the bar is closing (Diane is one of the bartenders off the top of my head)
In context the Diane being referred to in the song however is a woman that I believe helped Rivers early in his career and showed him the ropes etc (ie. the whole thing about her giving him the map) and that he felt he had never thanked properly and hadn't seen in ages?

This is awesome but it kinda doesn’t work. I think they mainly should have focused on the vocals from the Pinkerton deluxe version and only included backing vocals from other versions when appropriate.
