shout out @BaroudeurFlipFlop it was one of his fav
i get that but she’s technically not underage so idk what’s the fuzz about it’s just edgy lyrics
In the lyrics he portrayed her as 18yo but he also stated he didn't know anything about her
Cuomo wrote "Across The Sea" after receiving a fan letter from a Japan. A young girl wrote to him, asking several questions about his everyday life during the depressing winter he spent at Harvard University in 1995. Some of these questions actually appear in the song, as the opening lyrics show. On his relationship with the girl, Cuomo remarked, "When I got the letter, I fell in love with her. It was such a great letter. I was very lonely at the time, but at the same time I was very depressed that I would never meet her. Even if I did see her, she was probably some fourteen-year-old girl, who didn't speak English." When asked in 2006 about the girl, he commented, "I don't know anything about her and I've never contacted her." The lyrics also make mention of Cuomo's adolescent consideration of becoming a monk to win the favor of older women, as well as the idea that his mother is responsible for his romantic shortcomings.

I remember hearing about the story first in this video ^ and don't remember them mentioning she was of age (will check later again) but the "fuzz" was properly the way rivers explained the situation in the first place
Ps: that video is very informative with interview excerpts
