he originally wrote looking for a fight in 2003 and reworked it 12 years later

yeah if anything these demos he’s selling revealed a lot of more stuff like that

like the original melody for byzantine goes back to 2009 too, same with too many thoughts goes back to 1998!! and many more

the byzantine melody goes back even farther, 1998 “there’s a bomb in the air”

rivers has learned webmastering and codding his own website where he opened a market place to sell his home demos - that is the only ones that are solo without contributions or collaborations and the songs hes “abandoning” as in he won’t be miming into these melodies to make new songs out of it - he’s selling it by packages, it covers all from the 80s to now

this demo is from the white era pacakage so 2015

its inspired by his hangouts with katy goodman from the band la sera - the same that inspired mexican fender, so it’s safe to assume she has a way with words was the seeds of that concept

you’re gonna love this one even more, ewbaite era - super pinkerton feel, unreal that he’s abandoning it but that’s what genuis does

it hurts my heart a lil that isn’t gonna be used for anything upcoming, although i do hear the connection w mexican fender it takes on a totally different feel and tone. i woke up with that demo in my head, his voice is just so perfect for that stripped back melody and raw sound. I would kill for the acoustic album to be in that vein, it could be so special

I really like this other more aggressive demo too but that black skinhead one is so good and such an interesting way of repurposing it and giving it his own little additions too, especially the guitar near the end. I hope van weezer takes on this style a little on the album tracks, i know he’s favoring those chugging 80s hair metal guitars on purpose but he could kill this looser more aggressive poppy sound too

yeah, honestly pretty disappointed byzantine was the final product of all those attempts at using the melody. not a huge fan of that track or black in general

nah byzantine way better imo makes it exotic and new, we never get bossanova energy like this from them or anyone else in the game, it makes a great melody more relevant to the output, some of the past demos of it are cool but comes off just like another weez track - some of the later anthem sounds too stadium pop rock

idk byzantine sounds like cheesy cruise ship elevator music to me. i’m all for weezer trying out new sounds, but i don’t think their take on bossanova came out very well on byzantine. it sticks out like a sore thumb and not for any good reasons. it makes the vocal melody (which is naturally catchy) sound kind of grating.

happy hour is a better example of a nonsense island/caribbean-inspired pop song imo.

OK Blue Album done, man that was nice I love the energy, and I think a lot of the lyrics are quite funny or ridiculous, also some touching moments in there... I love the instrumentation ad vocals too!
FAV songs : Word Has Turned, Buddy Holy, Undone, Surf Wax America, Say It Ain't So, Holiday, also I really like the end of Only in Dreams

it’s prolly a diff feel for you if you heard their later work first, rivers was young on blue etc it’s more 90s grungy but it’s goated

blue pinkerton white and pacific daydream are all in the same silver plate

if i got to pick one it’s probably blue

but blue and pink are like yung yang of what you go through life so it can be one or the other tbh

pacific is probably right behind tho i think i like it better than white even if i would recommend white more often

i know i love that demo bc it’s so like rivers stream conscious free floating you know he’s very really on storytelling romantically these hangouts in great details

he did say one of the next weezer album post ok human and van weezer will be full acoustic!

that’s where the connection is with mexican fender really bc it’s based off of the same story

black skinhead sample is goated so groovy love how he lays the guitar on it and it grows little by little without taking away too much from it

think van weezer is gonna be more classic weezer i did a recap of what we know and heard of

Blue for sure tbh. Timeless album that doesn't age. Wanted to learn Say It Ain't So on guitar few days back but broke my b string and only string I had here had a kink in it so waiting for my string to come in the mail now!
