ill never forget one time in school bus island in the sun played on the radio and i was in nirvana phase and idk y maybe because how loud the chorus hits in contrast to the verses (the famous quiet loud quiet method nirvana picked from pixies) i thought these guys must like nirvana even tho the song really isn’t nirvana at all - so i googled weezer nirvana stuff right away and lo n behold there’s bootlegs of them covering mr moustache, that blew me away never i heard of another band covering these kind of nirvana deep cuts especially early ones, it made it more crazy that i was so into bleach at the time

crazy how ric was the one who heard his home demo and said it’s a hit while rivers didn’t think much of it or picked on it at first - similar situation to buddy holly where rivers didn’t even thought of it making the album but ric said it was a hit - that’s what a good producer does

speaking of LOVE this live version of island in the sun where rivers really switches up the solo to something new and different than the verse melody, so cool

Also now thinking about it most likely is intentional tbh considering the timing of it being conceived which again is pretty interesting how far the kurt influence went where it even impacted such a soft poppy song

from the cars to weezer, what an amazing legacy god bless his sweet soul i know it hurted scott the most bc they REALLY clicked and got close beyond music making, they hang out and when the cars were inducted in the rock’n’roll hall of fame he reached out directly to scott to fill in the bassist part

he started seeing him as a mentor so his passing was hard on him the most

and yeh you know never gave it a second thought but you’re right, rivers was on a mission to do the best comeback and nirvana went out of fashion so he def picked on that, well and he was always a pixies fan too so it only makes sense, he just made it his own spin to the method but i remember the chorus used to get me off guard - and i love it, it would be so easy and boring if it didn’t pick up like it did
