In Devs Amaya had already built a fully working quantum computer, though I don’t remember if they ever specified what the hardware was they used, though based on that floating structure probably superconducting chips controlled via magnetic fields.
The fictional company had achieved the full stack of quantum computing from physical qubits all the way to digital circuits letting the coders interact with it from normal computers.
The issue quantum computers face in the real world is that one of the integral components of that stack, maintaining what’s called “coherence”, which allows encoding and retrieving calculations from the quantum system is extremely difficult. Many attempts to improve coherence time have been performed in the spatial dimension, like improving the circuit itself. The findings from the paper are saying they improved this component via encoding information along an additional axis of time. imagine the difference between one axis or two. On a line(one dimension) you can basically just make points, but with two axes you get access to the entirety of shapes and geometry. This ordered complexity begets greater information. Apparently doing so greatly improves the integrity of the qubit coherence.

I’m a quantum physicist so I kind of know what’s going on. The article isn’t too bad but a little misleading. Basically this is talking about a way to prevent errors in a quantum circuit by inducing a phase through laser pulses acting on atoms held at low temperatures in an ion trap. Error correction is a big deal in quantum because it’s really hard to keep qubits in superposition without them entangling with their outside environment.
