Recently heard a review of Gustave Flaubert's Salammbo and it sounds brutal and epic. Large scale battles and violence and all. @op

He renewed interest in the period and actually visited the locations.
I'll def be reading it sometime this year.

It is just straight up a history book but your mention of crusades brought to mind Conquerors: How Portugal Forged the First Global Empire. I found it to be quite engagingly written and the subject matter very interesting and even thrilling. It essentially describes the Portuguese voyages of discovery, their early colonies in Africa and Asia, and the various conflicts they fought around the world.
Another history book which is similarly engagingly written and has, for lack of better words, an “exciting storyline”, is Nemesis: Alcibiades and the Fall of Athens. This one is set in Classical Greece and deals with the fascinating figure of Alcibiades, who was a key military and political leader at the twilight of the Athenian Golden Age.
Read an actual book on Roman history, 300 was bullshit @op
