i wanna put the airpods max to the test so i can see the full potential of atmos...i've heard renaissance, dawn fm, and some talking heads albums so far
I forget tbh and it’s hard to find all the Dolby mixes, they got rid of the hip hop atmos category on the atmos page for some reason. Used to be easier to browse when there were less releases
I think Life After Death was mostly pretty cool

yeah finding mixes for albums is annoying af. i gotta hear life after death though i can just imagine the bass being thick af

first song i listened to on mine was “give up the ghost” by radiohead and it was life changing

I just realized I think they removed the Dolby mix of Life After Death for some reason but they still have Ready to Die. Also Dangelo Brown Sugar was cool

yeah im loving these so far
When you have time to sit and really digest it, Music for Psychedelic Therapy by Jon Hopkins is absolutely beautiful in Atmos
I forgot about this gimmick tbh. Anybody actually listen on a 5.1 system?
I thought the whole point was to simulate surround sound in headphones, are Dolby atmos mixes even the same as 5.1? I didn’t think so

I don't know if that makes more or less sense tbh. Reminds me of the post-production 3D film fad
Is it me or Atmos mixes too quiet and sound like they’re drowned in random reverb

the volume does get reduced yes i've noticed that. depending on the song, there are times i've noticed that the vocals have been drowned out in reverb fs

It’s just different mixes with more panning and reverb. The general effect is more sound separation. I can definitely hear elements/instruments more distinctly from each other on most of them

i'd say in general (especially when it first came to AM), it can be a bit gimmicky. but the albums in OP kinda blew my mind, especially renaissance. whoever did the dolby mix for that album is a genius

i think 5.1 is just six channels of audio panned left to right and front/back. not enough for atmos since they don’t support a Z axis
afaik the dolby digital format mixes audio channels down to several stems panned left/right and back/front from -63 to +63
the dolby atmos format encodes up to 128 audio channels as objects in a 3d space (panned -100 to +100 along three axes)
not an audiophile but i think you need at least a 5.1.2 speaker setup (or headphones with real time spatial awareness)

How does it compare to just using open back headphones instead of earbuds?
How does it compare to just using open back headphones instead of earbuds?
I usually use open back. Ear buds aren’t as bass heavy so it’s not as “thick” but the unique mixes on Dolby atmos make for a different experience all together. Like some songs are very altered by the mix.
There’s definitely more separation in atmos with earbuds than regular with open back if that’s the question. The mixes literally rearrange the whole thing and pans things further apart than they are in original mixes. I heard Abbey Road a million times but the atmos mix had me noticing subtleties that I never had

this is surely just down to whoever mixes it right? and that people are generally making music for stereo
it was probably the same when they switched from mono to stereo, only this will probably take more time to fully reach its potential
