I usually use open back. Ear buds aren’t as bass heavy so it’s not as “thick” but the unique mixes on Dolby atmos make for a different experience all together. Like some songs are very altered by the mix.
There’s definitely more separation in atmos with earbuds than regular with open back if that’s the question. The mixes literally rearrange the whole thing and pans things further apart than they are in original mixes. I heard Abbey Road a million times but the atmos mix had me noticing subtleties that I never had
do your headphones explicitly support atmos? how does this work

Yeah idk if it’s just marketing but Dolby Atmos supposedly needs either AirPods or certain Beats headphones to work right/be optimized. I use AirPods when I want to listen to atmos. But I’ve listened on other headphones before just to check and I think you can still hear the different mixes on anything. I’m still not 100% sure on that aspect

It’s honestly pretty cool, I think a lot of people wrote it off because the marketing of it and what it actually is is kind of confusing. It’s literally just remixes basically

do you have airpod pros? i feel like the spatial tracking makes a huge difference

I just don't care much for selection paralysis. Like Canned Heat's Going Up The Country sounds a lot better without the remaster. Now it's like mono, stereo, remaster, Dolby, etc. How many releases do I care enough to shop around? Not many lol

I do, but from what I understand, Dolby atmos does not use spatial tracking.
When I watch a TV show on my AirPods and I turn my head, then the sound moves like it’s coming from the screen
But moving your head around while listening to spatial audio doesn’t do anything, at least for me. It’s just different mixes. They kind of advertised it like you need that spatial tracking or like it would really move around but it’s just wider mixes. Goes back to the labeling and marketing of this being very confusing

I mean, realistically Dolby is just a novelty, it can be cool to hear an album in a different way, it’s not going to replace a definitive mix so I wouldn’t look at it like that, more just a fun bonus

I just spent like 15 minutes figuring out what the hell a "Doxy" remaster is for Jazz releases and apparently their copyrights expired for anything older than 50 years in the EU and these labels over their do their own releases. Just more s*** to sort through. Doxy label sounds good though
i'd say in general (especially when it first came to AM), it can be a bit gimmicky. but the albums in OP kinda blew my mind, especially renaissance. whoever did the dolby mix for that album is a genius
I think it definitely depends who mixed it and if it was made with spatial audio. Some of the albums that were not natively mixed in Atmos just sound off. Like Oxymoron by Q it just sounded a little weird.
On the other hand some of the Atmos mixes sound really really cool.
These were some of my favorite Atmos mixes:
Wasteland - Brent Faiyaz
Life of a Don - Don Toliver
Stankonia & ATLiens - Outkast
Self Titled & RPBMH - Vince Staples
THIB - Isaiah Rashad
Orange Print - Larry June
TLOP5 & Good Movie - Pi’erre
I think there’s a lot of other albums that sound good with Atmos like 2000 by Joey Bada$$, Carti’s catalogue, and most of Thugs catalogue but maybe not so amazing that I’d list them with the other albums above.
If anyone has not listened to the new Doggystyle mix by Snoop yet, go listen and tell me that doesn’t sound goofy as hell

Stankonia def one of the better atmos mixes I've heard
