  • People who ask a lot of questions tend to be smart.

People who speak on things that they have no understanding of tend to be stupid.

What are some signs you have seen?

I think it has a lot to do with having empathy.
Dumb people aren’t able to put themselves in other people’s shoes, and attach themselves to cults as result.
That’s true for emotional intelligence, anyway.

Idk about that first one. Depends on the setting and the type of questions I guess

As far as behavior, there’s ignorance vs mindfulness, which is an emotional subject, not an intelligence one. The ignorant guy could know just as much as the mindful one. People also think smart people are more authentic and that’s definitely not true, in my experience the smartest ones are fake as hell and build rapport and get to their goals. I think there’s many ways to interpret it all but you asked what makes someone smart not intelligent, smart people accomplish their agendas. Stupid people don’t know how to achieve their goals.

You can go further down the rabbit hole. Stupid people simply don’t have goals. Smart people have goals. Stupid people don’t make friends easily. Smart people make friends easily. S*** like that

  • May 7, 2024

Smart people know how to bite their tongue and stupid people just say whatever comes to mind. Stupid people react easily where smart people aren’t so reactive

  • May 7, 2024

Last point, there’s a narrative that the quiet one in the room is the smartest and that could be true, but that could also be the donkey in the room, so yeah it depends a lot.

    Humility is a good sign.

Some of the dumbest people seem to be extremely arrogant.

Smart enough to know how dumb you are.

Being arrogant is a giant blind spot.

Yeah leaning towards EQ not necessarily IQ. People with high EQ really win people over. High IQ only and you’re still a bit of a donkey.

What’s the difference between being smart and being intelligent? I always thought they were synonymous.

I don’t agree that smart people achieve their goals and stupid people don’t. I think you can be smart and be a complete loser who never accomplishes anything.

Intelligence is more knowledge and smarts is more quickness imo. And you’re right about that but if you strip it back a little, a smart person would have a goal (even if they can’t achieve it) where as a stupid person wouldn’t have any goals. There’s a lot of compelling arguments that can be made for why someone is smart or dumb.

I also disagree that smart people make friends easily. I think it’s actually the opposite. Being a smart person in a world of stupid people can be quite alienating. It can make connection difficult. Unironically the Rick Sanchez effect.

I think an intelligent person would struggle to make friends while a smart person would make them easily but I see your point

    Ok ok.

I think you might be right about having goals, that does actually seem like a good litmus.

  • Someone that laughs away a subject cause they don't understand it

Ppl that judge openly and overly

    A lack of general knowledge/vocab

Ppl that try to humble you

It’s hard to separate smarts and intelligence cause they go hand in hand a lot but there’s a few instances where you can be one and not the other. Ignorant people can be very smart but lack the intellectual capacity to have more nuanced conversation. Someone can be intelligent as hell but be nowhere remotely as quick as a smart person.

I have a friend who’s a get kind of guy, quick, gets women, all of that, but if you actually talked to him for more than 5 minutes you’d realize he’s actually stupid. S*** like that

It sounds like, to you, being smart has a lot to do with real world results. Their quickness. Their ability to accomplish things. Their successes. So, Kanye would be someone incredibly smart, but he may not necessarily have the most intelligence. It sort of sounds like street smarts vs book smarts.

I don’t think I really like this framework much, but I’ll think about it. I think there’s emotional intelligence, and after that it just breaks down into a bunch of different categories you can be intelligent in. So, I’d call Ye a creative genius, which doesn’t make him a genius in every facet. People who are creative geniuses are able to find the metaphors in things, so that’s one differentiator.
