good album
The freest version of Drake. I miss him sometimes.
drake has said it was the album where he tried to cater to the label and billboard games the most and feels like half the album is him trying too much
which part of why they released marvins room as a single on tc as kind of a f*** you which the label didnt want them to do - and then the success of marvins room is what started the labels/industry relationship to let him do whatever he wants
its in the 100gigs iirc
It’s crazy because I think we talked about this but you gotta lump this in a super specific era when all the blog rappers were finally signed to labels and their debuts got f***ed up based on what they thought would work (in some cases it did) but it’s really like if you were there you know these dudes mixtapes versus their debuts were like night and day
J Cole really covered this well in his lil podcast series
Shut It Down being 7 minutes long is crazy it always felt like 4 mins
The OG version that was shorter was like 3 or 4 minutes I think
I remember the reaction on KLive to this was sooo brutal lol
But looking back I think it aged pretty solidly and I would easily take it over anything he’s released in the last decade other than Honestly Nevermind
