So that’s where the answer lies. Are there peripheral and marketing factors that work in Drake’s favor more than Wale’s? Sure, but at the end of the day Wale was never on Drake’s level in terms of the right vocals, production style and composition working together

But I really think it's simply because Drake had the co-sign of Lil Wayne who was at the time one of the biggest rappers in the world. Also being recognizable from his years as a childhood actor also helped give him a boost.
Nah colorism played a part in it too, Wayne co-signed rappers like Cory Gunz and Lil Twist and they never popped off like that.
Plus Drake had a whole song with Trey Songz from 2007, with a professional music video and still didn’t pop off until SFG.
