I ask this because I have a bad habit of not opening people's messages until I'm ready to reply because I feel like leaving people on read is a bit rude or awkward, and then I eventually just never open the message.

I go so far as to read a message on Facebook and if I'm not ready to reply yet, I just mark the message as unread again.

I would say read is worse but at the same time, some people are just impatient. If you know a person has a habit of not responding for at least 24 hours, then mentally prepare yourself to not have a response after a while
