Is it a fetishization of South Korea’s culture/people in general?
All of my reasonings come back to that, I’ll never say it’s bad music, but it’s nothing that hasnt been on the radio already for at least 6 yrs, just primarily in a different language

Showmanship & choreography. Also after a decade of minimalist pop, there was a lane for bombastic stadium anthem sounding pop

i dont really keep up with kpop anymore but back in the day (im thinking early 2010s maybe even before that) it used to be kind of "out there" as far as radio pop goes it was super ridiculous and bombastic and it made no sense sometimes which i think it's part of why it became huge in the first place.

    mental disorder

  • what ur talking abt is definitely part of it

also consider the way korea manufactures perfect pop stars like in f***ing factories basically

put these guys up against any domestic pop star and the only thing standing in the way of total domination is the language barrier

Boy/girl pop bands were always a thing until recently. Seems like that era is dead for some reason in the west, so the Koreans filled that position.

it is weird tho cause werent One Direction a thing recently years ago and they were huge? I guess the break up and start of solo careers had to do w it but youd think if they remained a group they would b where kpop is today

Have you ever thought maybe they just like the music. We're passionate about rappers the same way they are of those kpop singers they probably got a ktt of their own. People can have different tastes and new styles come and go.

i'm not american so my opinion prolly doesnt mean s*** but that may also be a factor. the kpop fans i know irl used to be one direction fans back in the day and i guess in a way these new groups fill that void

Perhaps it’s the latent desire for bombastic highly choreographed dance pop to return after a decade of hiphop dominating, but the “otherworldliness” of it being international gives it a freshness that skirts around the issue of US artists seemingly reviving a ‘dead’ genre - thus the public feels more comfortable embracing it rather than if current US artists attempted it

One could argue this recent commercial resurgence of dance pop in the west led by artists like Dua Lipa wouldn’t be allowed to happen if the KPop boom didn’t refresh the acceptance of big pop in this current hiphop dominated landscape

…or it’s some other s*** who tf knows lol

This seems to be the answer that makes the most sense for me, every pop star was just on Trap beats which is still kind of the case
