The Western fanbase is a loud and devoted following of a relatively niche genre

Well even though kpop is a music genre there's a lot of reliance on the visuals, from the MVs, to the make-up, and especially the choreography

this is pretty much a recipe for viral success, or at least further mainstream appeal--clip a couple of seconds of any performance and send it off to everyone you know!

then market to teens who have always loved boy and girl bands as early as the days of The Beatles

and as a side note: I'm not a kpop stan by any stretch of the imagination but I can't really think of any Western pop artists (at least current) whose choreographies are at the level of kpop's (maybe Beyonce's Single Ladies?)
