Diverting blame unto China is helpful for the government officials who fumbled this entire ordeal. The same ones who hollowed out social programs, degraded our institutions, and organized our economy in such a way to make everything fragile enough for a crisis to hit even worse.

I've seen no evidence China downplayed anything. People cite under-reporting, but that's been the case everywhere. America's numbers aren't anywhere close. We barely test, a lot of those tests are not made public, we're leading the planet in deaths, and there's good reason to believe a lot of deaths are not being attributed to corona.

Senators were moving stocks around to capitalize on this as far back as January. It's clear that the official line on the pandemic was not consensus behind the scenes. And now that it's here, people are food insecure, unemployment is climbing, and trillions are being injected into corporations to bolster stock prices while the populace suffers.

I don't think antagonizing China is going to do anything but result in either economic retaliation or out-and-out war. Neither sound appealing to me. I also think the people best equipped to criticize China probably live there and/or are at least far more familiar with the situation than I (and definitely you). I mean, I could still do it. I think China's state managed capitalist system is just as exploitative as any other especially regarding the rural poor. The conditions in those factories and how they depress labor abroad needs addressed. I also generally regard an invasive state intelligence to be a bad thing.
