i mean isnt the point of a mixtape that its free? stands to reason its not for profit anyway so why bother uploading it to streaming
Because we’ve reached a point where people are so dependent on streaming that they treat non-streaming released music as if it doesn’t exist or isn’t real until it’s officially uploaded onto DSPs. Plus there isn’t really a viable free platform to upload music onto nowadays that didn’t already have its day in the sun.
All of the mixtape apps have been taken down, SoundCloud is dead, YouTube is not a realistic place to upload a project and expect people to listen. It would take a brand new, completely free app that younger rappers start using and build a fanbase off of in order for it to go anywhere
How hard would that be realistically?
Like a pirate streaming service that’s not made for profit, just for the love of music
Streaming really f***ed up the creativity of everything.
Labels have more control over releases than before and uncleared sampled tracks stay unheard. As music consumers we’ve devolved from collecting our own digital libraries

Break out those iPods boys. Best adjustment you’ll ever make.
feel like u aint rly sit w wat i said cus anyone cuda made that argument for wayne back he was still a hot boy but being allowed to express himself that early allowed for his music to mature.
why bemoan the young for youth rather than a rapper's lack of talent and creativity at any age
u right

An app where you can download and store music locally by purchasing some, downloading some, and even ripping from physical copies.
I call it iTunes.

so blaming the accessibility of streaming instead of audience interest makes sense? sounds more like the consumption culture needs to change and the third party dsps like bandcamp need to step their game up. people preferring convenience over being genuinely tapped into their so called fav artists is telling. but it's also hard to keep up with in a world of information overload / new music~rappers every minute
soundcloud is past its heyday in terms of breaking out new hit stars (likely replaced by tiktok) but it has just as many listeners as apple music.
youre right that new app contenders are needed but just the ability to leverage youtube's algorithim to proliferate what could be a mixtape single is a huge advantage for an artist's career
going by rapping, performance, dancing, etc uzi is one of the purest hip hop artists of the past 10 years
Uzi got them moves

Yeah but that doesn’t really fit my countercultural DIY type of vibe you feel me?

iTunes is all DIY. Tag your own s***. Find your own music. Build it up over time. Throw it on the iPod. No need for a phone.

Buying digitally will forever be a thing of the past. There’s no point in it anymore. If you’re gonna spend real dollars on media, physical is always the way to go

The audience interest has been significantly diluted and affected by the accessibility of streaming is the point we’re trying to make. It’s never been this easy in the history of the music industry to discover and listen to music. That was always gonna have its side effects, both positive and negative
I’ve said it many times on here:
Mixtapes
Rappers competing to be the best
Rappers not jumping on random remixes
Rap cliques
Y'all, I didn't know Common was a B boy Lol
Me neither but makes a lot of sense lol
How hard would that be realistically?

It would be very hard now that paid streaming has kind of set in as the de facto way of listening. But no method in this industry lasts forever, so I’m sure there will be something next that replaces it. My fear is that it’ll be some sort of subscription based service to specific record labels or artist groups.
If there was some free not-for-profit service that popped up at some point, it would take either the most anticipated young talent or the biggest established stars to co-sign it for it to have any real movement. SoundCloud didn’t just blow because it was SoundCloud, it blew because the hottest guy in rap was regularly posting loosie songs for free on there at the same time that a brand new crop of interesting and exciting artists were making names for themselves on there

I know I’m the anomaly. But I just go to artists websites to buy digital. Download it and throw it on the iPod.

Yep. So much instant and infinite accessibility is bad. Objectively bad.

You’re dropping heat my friend
Everyone saying mixtapes but that can’t happen until streaming ends and ownership comes back.
thank lord finesse for that
You’re dropping heat my friend
I’ve been anti-streaming for a few years now. The damage it’s done to music culture just seems to get worse and worse with every day

The damage is done. All we can do is what we do.
For sure. But there's some gems. Mick Jenkins went fully independent this year. Saba I think is independent and got a great project this year. Idk Little Simz contract status but she's great
little simz signed to herself and has a distribution deal it’s actually way more common to be a major act as an independent artist in the uk
