Everyone talking down on Kendrick, but the nigga is genuinely trying to show how we all can participate and help. If you know anything about global citizen, then you know how awesome this is

“Lamar's entertainment company pgLang is teaming up with Global Citizen, the advocacy organization known for staging charity concerts around the world, to launch an initiative called Move Afrika: A Global Citizen Experience”

That entire steppers role out rubbed me the wrong way. From the tiktok bait second song, him saying "I'm not your savior" as if his entire rise to stardom didn't come from saying the exact f***ing opposite. He's chickening out. And you shouldn't respect it as a man.

I honestly respect him chickening out tbh. It marks a real level of maturity and authenticity to admit that you bit off more than you could chew and let your ego get the best of you. Better that than him going the Killer Mike route

Ideally Kendrick woulda never positioned himself as a savior and just capped that arc off on GKMC with him rising to a community role model for kids back home

But at least he's not bragging about being a landlord and complaining that gay people are too woke nowadays while still claiming to be some sort of "socialist" a la Killer Mike

And Alright is a legit protest anthem so in his own small way he achieved his goal of being a generational voice. He just didn't become the next MLK

I think that's what draws resentment by a lot of rap fans for Kendrick as well, which is weird to me because Kendrick really wasn't pandering to white people, or even white guilt, on TPAB. It just resonated with a lot of middle class white liberals because it's a popular, relatively accessible, and politically charged but not too radical record that is like the rap version of a Pink Floyd record for a lot of those folks

I miss the mid-2010s when rap fans were bumping all kinds of music and just enjoying it for the sake of it. The rightward shift in American culture in general ruined that trend

You put it into words exactly as I was thinking man. I ain't even got anything against Kendrick himself since he ain't done any of this. I personally find that his Stan's are annoying as f*** since they are elitist asf and I find that's more destructive to discourse than Stan's of, say Future or Drake for example. As if they're morally superior or revolutionary for listening to easily accessible conscious rap. Then the cherry on top when they're middle class white liberals too just makes it a weird situation for me imho.

I actually don't listen to Mr Morale like that

But I still think he makes good music from a structural standpoint, is an excellent rapper, and GKMC/TPAB are two all-time favorites of mine

Whole lotta disrespect in this thread man. Kendrick making a lot of quiet moves some of our favorites never would consider. Creating music inspired by places some of our favorites have never even set foot to understand the historical context and plight of black people all across the world.

TPAB was so greatly accepted because it sparked conversations surrounding racism and apartheid, and how these same practices still exist until this day! Despite all of that, the people who suffered these atrocities were still happy! Something he never experienced in his jaded community back home. That was the whole point of TPAB, for us not to hurt our kinkfolk because we were victims of trauma caused by the brutality of outsiders

Should you compare Kendrick Lamar to Huey Newton or Thomas Sankara? No lmao

Does his s*** sound good? Yes

Is the message good? Generally yes

The heroes and revolutionaries are in your communities not at the Grammy's. 99% of the time the people at the Grammy's are the people you gotta fight the revolution against

Most people itt like them both

They're not going at each other right now, never really have in a direct way, and at this point are really different artists lol. There truly is not direct competition aside from I guess sales but Drake's always been ahead of Kendrick in sales so even that's not really a useful comparison

Drake isn't half the songwriter Kendrick is
