Do you base it on their discography and what they've done in the past or do you rate them based on their peers?

Do you knock points off an album if it has filler? Or do you make a playlist and base it on how many songs you like?

Just a good number of songs I like, production styles I enjoy throughout, a nice length for an easily enjoyable full listen, and cover art that hits my eye just right - and perfectly symbolizes the intent of the music for my imagination as I listen

For instance do you take points off 2001 for having filler? Or rate DAMN by Kendrick compared to his other albums? Or do you compare DAMN to the other albums that dropped that year etc

Amount of songs I like on it is probably the main factor. Second would be how many skips.

I think people place way too much weight on skips though. Every album has them.

Having 1-4 songs you don’t f*** with is pretty normal for the most part.

Theres a difference between a song you dont care for or are neutral/indifferent with & a song you genuinely dislike

3 to 4 songs you actually genuinely dislike on a regular 10 to 15 track album is huge lol

i dont rank them i just listen to them or dont

There really isn’t a difference though. You won’t be running those songs back either way so they just become irrelevant.

At least that has been my experience. I’m sure some people like to listen to the albums in full each time

Yeah but imagine one of those albums where every song is at least 8/10. To me that’s like purple rain or something and most albums don’t reach that level lol

I base it off how much I like it and genuinely enjoy listening to it. When I say genuine enjoyment, I mean it actually has to be really fun to revisit so sort of like replay value. I know some albums that have stayed playable for over a decade now so that’s a clear indicator to me that they’re winners lol

music is meant to be listened to. if i dont feel the urge to repeatedly listen to it then im not ranking it higher than what i do feel the urge to repeatedly listen to

I respect that. I do see the value of replay value also but I guess I don’t want it to be the be all end all cus I know sometimes I like stuff but don’t necessarily replay it for one reason or the other or sometimes my replays don’t always constitute my favorite s*** in the long run? But still tho… replay value is probably one of the most worthy metrics because it’s the s*** that’s easy to come back to that’s gonna hold you down when you’re at your worst

like LEMONADE is easily my favorite Beyonce album ever, i typically throw on 4 or her self-titled because it’s easier to listen to, lots of bangers, it’s just generally a more accessible listen and isn’t as emotionally heavy as LEMONADE is

MUSIC, audio art. designed to be listened to. if i wanna LISTEN to it, it plays in my head all day, i think about it, dissect it, appreciate it, enjoy it. im not tryna be lectured about state of affairs and real scholarly s*** all day. im tryna get thru the motions of life and enjoy what i have without constant existential crises
