Trying to find information or pictures of his studio setups, etc. Seems since post 2016 there's a very clear compression/vocal chain he uses on each recording, curious what his setup is like
iPhone mic
He learned this from Jay Z on Never Let me Down
Not even trolling
It shouldn't be considered trolling lol it's pretty generally accepted here now
**** everybody in the thread lmao anyways he is mostly using live mics to record

“I just rap into my iPhone. Best microphone on the planet,” he explained. “Thirty, forty percent of The College Dropout was recorded on a Roland VS-1680. Twenty percent of JESUS IS KING was recorded on an iPhone.”
Actual answer: he's been seen using a Shure SM58 lately. Allows him to hold it in his hand which a lot of artists prefer as it emulates performing live on stage. It's only a $100 mic but it's the industry standard live wired vocal mic that pretty much everyone uses. With the right EQ, compression and mixing it can compete with a condenser, it's just not gonna sound as open and airy, as it tends to pick up whatever is closest to the capsule and rejects room sound as much as possible. I'm an audio engineer and am very familiar with the mic, and you can totally tell it's used all over JIK, and it sounds like it was used on WUITB as well.

is that why the vocals sound a little 'flat'? genuinely curious, cause imo the vocal quality of JiK and Ye were a pretty noticeable step down, and WUITB vocals sound like this as well

Totally know what you mean. I would use the word "dry" instead of flat personally, but yeah, that's why. It's known that he used a Sony C800G on his previous albums, which is like a ten thousand dollar condenser microphone, so that's why you pick up on the "noticeable step down" in quality.

Except this is wrong in regards to Ye. He used the same Sony mic
Damn near every studio pic from that era they using the Sony joint. Look at when him and TI was creating
Now with JIK yes he used live mics and iPhones to record
