It must be a NY thing to say this song is actually good cause that Kraftwerk sample is WAY too dissonant and minor for the major key hook and sunshiny (no pun intended) nature of the song. Legit top 5
Worst commercially released songs imo (Break Up by Mario is the worst I think tho)
This remix is much better
Great segment on just how embarrassing this video was on the Netflix show "Hip Hop Evolution". Could've been the end of Jay if his next single wasn't Hard Knock Life
Early 2000s aesthetic >>>>
Actually,Hype Williams switched up his whole style in the early 2000s,focusing on wide shots and cinematics. You can look it up yourself cause that era of his directing is interesting but actually kinda boring but this Missy video is probably one of the better examples of that era
It was the style back then
Most of Hype videos were like that.
Hype Williams>>>>
A lot of Hype videos were actually like this too tho
He probably has more purely cinematic videos then fisheye lens ones tbh. This one is one of my personal favs from him
Guilty pleasure song. Not one hov’s best but the people that enjoy it I respect.
that bass hard though
i love this video
This remix is much better
I guarantee it if this was the instrumental, the MV wouldn't have caused any issue.
Tbh In My Lifetime is bogged down by by trying to be a Bad Boy Shiny Suit era record without really knowing what made those records work. Like The Hitmen could really work those 70's/80's funk and disco records in a way Roc-a-Fella couldn't

!https://youtu.be/opkRF3UZSJwYou're right. I think i was more focused on the fashion in the video, which would have still been hot in the early 2000's (by my memory). Which tells me that Hov was early with it for 1997.

well the in my lifetimes thru vol 3 are his best material, aside from buried bp2 and dynasty cuts

Jay had real money before rap so he was able to be ahead of the curve in terms of fashion. I can imagine him and Dame had a lot of gear rappers only started bragging about in the 2000s,you seen Biggie with the Bape on way back in like 96? When you have money, you can be ahead of the curve.

Jay was waaaaaaay behind the curve in this instance tho, he was blatantly copying Bad Boy with this video lol he was so embarrassed by this video he almost didn't survive it. NY media and fans killed him for this video and almost wrote him off. It was jarringly commercial for him and the fans and media absolutely s*** on him for it. His next single was a do or die single for him and he knocked it out of the park with Hard Knock Life. Saved his career at a crossroads point where it could've gone the other way. He tweeted like 10 years ago that this album and video still haunts him lol
The music video was directed by Hype Williams. Jay-Z is featured in the video rapping in a room resembling a Rubik's Cube & having a carnival theme to it with Foxy Brown rapping alongside of him. Jay-Z & co-founder of Roc-A-Fella, Damon Dash later regretted doing the video citing that the video wasn't their style.
Busta Rhymes video style tbh

Biggie wasn’t on bape
He was at a photo shoot and someone there had that bape camo on and he liked it and asked to try it on for the pic, but it was way too small, so he just draped over his shoulders

It was definitely goofy of him to drop a single and video like this vs f***ing Wu Tang Forever in the yr of 1997. It’s almost like he wanted that Will Smith-Getting Jiggy With It lane but NY wasn’t having it. The fashion in the video is most likely all designer suits and shades tho,no matter how goofy they made it look, people weren’t on that,so they were ahead of the curve in that department.

Still,I’m pretty sure if he liked the jacket,he’d been interested in getting himself one. Plus,it’s the just the idea of Biggie being seen with Bape on way back in 96,showing that rappers were attracted to the brand early on.
vol 1 without sunshine (overhated) and i know what girls like is like a 9/10 album
Yup. Facts
well the in my lifetimes thru vol 3 are his best material, aside from buried bp2 and dynasty cuts
Love the IMl alot of quality music but I was just talking specifically this song
this is a bop tho
