Virtue signalling means just what you are describing. It is about presenting yourself as an ally for the attention and to be perceived as a good person. I see this often on social media but I do not like using the term 'virtue signalling' because it is so heavily associated with the alt right. I don't use the term at all anymore, but there are absolutely many white people on social media who spend more time making the struggle of black people about themselves than actually helping.
And you are not wrong about uptight white people who get offended often being terrible people. Racist jokes among black and white friends are fine. I do it all the time to black friends. Obviously never going to go too far, but some basic racist jokes are fine. To be uptight about it suggests something is being hidden. Joking around allows us to be more comfortable about race and talking about it. When you are comfortable to speak about racism and race, you become comfortable to have a joke about it too. But I will tell you that as a white male, there are many things I feel uncomfortable saying or doing towards a black person or a woman due to the dynamic. For example, I would allow a woman to get away with disrespect towards me that I would not allow a man to do because I do not like the optics of me being hostile towards a woman.
Just wanted to mention altruism. You mentioned that people do good deeds just for themselves. This is often the case for all people when they do good deeds. They do it to make themselves feel better about themselves. It doesn't necessarily mean you promote it on social media because that is lowbrow, but when you do something nice for somebody, you naturally feel better about yourself as a person. It is why there is no true altruism. On some level, we all do the nice things we do to feel better about ourselves.
In the end, it is best for us to just assume the best of people. These people we speak of often do expose themselves. Call that out if you see it, but best to avoid confrontation with them. I find these type of people who are concerned with protecting everyone and everything for some social media likes also happen to be very aggressive personalities. Perhaps a lot of this comes from the cancel mentality.
I see the aggressive mentality a lot on the left and it pains me as somebody on the far left. All they are concerned with doing it using others people's struggles to attack people. There are many more effective ways to tackle inequality.
