Newport News isn't dangerous, only downtown Newport News is, and maybe Aqueduct.

The rest of it is reasonable. Tbh I recommend move to Hampton. Because it has tons of intricate little side streets and minor roads.

Basically traffic never gets that bad. Since Newport News only has two roads to travel on traffic becomes autisticly packed.

The only part of Newport News I recommend living in is the east end.

  • Dec 10, 2020

$1,128 is the average in Tuscaloosa
That price is driven up by some of the expensive student housing in the middle of town.

    I pay $740 for a 2 bedroom 1000 sq ft

That can happen to anyone man.

I’m already looking to build a house with my girl. We’re just waiting. I’m going to rent out my current house, instead of selling it. That house is under my name. When the time comes, I’ll sell it. Use that money for my kids education and chuck most of it into the new house. That’s the goal.

If you’re always moving and etc, you can still have a house but just have the house on a lease. Still a good way to get the house paid. Use it as an investment property.

You don’t have to live in the house, but I always feel like if s*** goes bad at least you have that property to bounce back on. It’s something you own.

You’re talking bout maintenance but forgetting renting is f***ed up. Depending on what type of landlord or agency you’re with, they can take forever to get something done for you. I rather get s*** done on my own term. No need to wait for someone else.

This is such a personal view of the topic. The decision between renting and owning is extremely complex and based completely on variables unique to individuals.

The adage of ‘rent is throwing money away’ is tired at this point. The concept, as it is used today, is void of thought. It is just something people say to sound superior and/or intelligent.

if you got kids, then yeah buying is probably the way to go

after seeing how covid played out, being a landlord is pretty far down on the list of things i'd like to pursue. beyond that though, a lot of people get the idea that renting out property is passive-income. it is not. it's a part-time job at minimum and an entire career at maximum. if you don't happen to live in the same city, then you'll need to seek out a property management company and there goes about 10% of your proceeds on top of everything else you pay (mortgage, mortgage insurance, HOA, property tax, etc. list goes on) it gets worse depending on your area too, if you ever have to evict someone in my state then lol see you next year (literally). it's all fun and games until your tenant gets drunk and drops a shot glass into the garbage disposal.

one of the things i've realized is that housing should not be an investment; housing should be a home. it's one of the most undiversified assets you can have and the value can be affected drastically with ease. bit of an anecdote, but if i were to sell my grandma's house, i could roll $150k (only about 5/8 of my profit) into an index fund bringing in a conservative estimate return of 7%, and hold it there for 25 years, i'd make $1.2 million. if i were to hold on to the house and rent it at average market value for 25 years, the BEST case scenario i'd have is $750k assuming best possible conditions (literally 0 vacancies and repairs, which ain't gonna happen). yeah i'll take the index funds, plus i don't have to worry about whether or not the funds forget they left the oven on

this is true if you're renting from small and/or private landlords. after dealing with them, i'd never rent out at a house again. i have nothing but good things to say about the maintenance staff at the apartments i've lived in though, they always got s*** done as scheduled.

Wow most of you are paying rent that's under $1000?? I have to pay $3150 for a just 1 bedroom. I am jealous but I also don't want to leave NYC.

With the amount some of you guys are paying for rent, you could be paying a mortgage.

    Ownership>>>>>

Gotta consider the down payment which is mostly what holds back households from going for home ownership.
