Fire Red or Leaf Green it is. I was leaning towards these two after doing some further investigating. I’m not too familiar with the new Pokémon in the newer versions.

How? Hoenn was a great region, great Pokemon designs, abilities were introduced, and not to mention Emerald is a solid contender for best Pokemon game. Also FR/LG are the only way to play original Kanto games without wanting to blow your brains out, with good postgame as well

ruby/sapphire was my go to gba pokemon, but mystery dungeon if spinoff are included

Crystal was my favorite as a kid but the best way to play is SS/HG

btw i highly rec the rom hack 'pokemon gaia' for those that liked RSE and FRLG. it's basically the closest thing we'll get to a 3rd gen 3 rpg and has an incredible amount of polish for a rom hack
