    Doesn’t mean they didn’t pretend to appeal to their interests

    Also, it could be argued that appealing to white supremacy, even if it doesn’t directly materially benefit poor whites- it does ideologically benefit them in a real way. How you see yourself represented in the world can be, in short, psychologically gratifying. I believe this is part of why we see poor whites w no generational mobility continue to support the politics that don’t materially help them
