If you don’t see the blockchain as legitimate, (which it isn’t) why tf should you care if someone has a receipt that connects to it saying they own something on it?

What do you mean by saying it isn't legitimate?

The value comes from a generated hash that designates your ownership over the art form. You own the hash that is tacked onto the original piece, not the art itself

It’s problematic because people can create NFTs for art they don’t own and sell it. That’s what happened with the Chadwick Boseman NFT

But why is the hash itself valuable? That's where I get lost at...if I have the digital image on my phone/laptop, why would I care to have a hash that says that I actually own it?

Precisely, it doesn’t matter what the original was. You don’t even own the original, you own a token designated towards it.

Sure it works for digital items that needs verification before they’re actually used, like a pass or something but idk when that even would be needed

A bunch of neck beards jerking off in a server room is not exactly as legitimate as green backs ensured by national governments.

It’s stupid but doesn’t rlly matter bc people have already bought into it. It’s basically over imo they’re here to stay

the real value of NFTs have virtually nothing to do with how theyre being used now, the current market for them really is just a dumbass way of making short-term money and taking advantage of the concept's notability, extrapolations to solve real world issues gives them value but that's completely disconnected from how they're being treated right now. they aren't an economic solution, they're a technological one.

This is an interesting take. So do you think all the dudes who are buying and selling jpegs of weed smoking monkeys and lions are clowns giving NFTs a bad reputation?

    Exactly.

NFTs can be used in the real world to prevent fraud by authenticating supply chain products.

The smart contracts in NFTs can greatly expedite the selling and buying process of real estate.

They can be used to verify collectible items/memorabilia.

Domain names as NFTs are permanently recorded into the blockchain and thus can be very effective against censorship.

Many many real world applications for NFTs.

Absolutely. This is the issue with the crypto landscape as a whole. Crypto is a genuinely interesting and innovative technology, especially its derivatives/tenets (such as NFTs). The problem is just like every other innovation/technology of the past 30 years, it's application has been hijacked by wannabe stock traders and silicon valley VCs. There are still people innovating with these concepts but you won't hear about it until the right VC gets ahold of it to explode it.

I see NFTs definitely being tied to things like Domains, Server/Client Validity, hell, you can replace HTTPS & SSL/TLS security with some form of NFT issuing instead of the current certificate-issuing format. You can even use them for validation of ID or something. These are all explorable topics but instead of hearing about this when someone says NFTs everyone thinks "isnt that the thing where some idiot paid $1M for a jpeg"

I don't get your point lol

social security numbers were never designed as secure numbers like credit cards or passports, they've only been used as such cause Americans are afraid of national ID'S it's a terrible system

you can't add the values of the first digits to verify the last, the numbers aren't random in anyway.. if you were born in the hospital the same day as me our numbers would be 2 digits different I could guess your number

NFTs with random number generation would honestly be a good use case for Social Security numbers

    Interesting actually
