Luke is from Georgia it’s Keith Urban who’s the Australian country singer but your point still stands

I know his type very well. Smile in your face and like to talk about their one black friend bet he don’t even know what a black power fist is

Post Malone's album is more like typical mainstream country music full of features with people like Morgan Wallen, Blake Shelton, Luke Combs, etc

Cowboy Carter is not exactly a country album and it's a mix of various genres (country being one of them) relating to American Southern culture, etc.

his blending of country with pop, rock, rap and even some alternative/indie sounds and image checks a lot of boxes in the current country boom. plus I think he's also got a very middle america appeal and reaches across a few age brackets which helps him a ton in the country world. and finally a distinct voice and emotional subject matter which helps him form a personal connection with the audience which also fits current trends

coworker type people who'd say things like "i don't believe in genre, just good music!". lower class white people in rural areas who might look kinda like him. and that brand of white people who were probably big eminem fans but then drifted more towards radio rock or country. He appeals to all those groups

perfect example of right place right time

Personally, as long as it’s authentic, I don’t think artists should necessarily be gatekeeping genres

  • Shady Ant

I think it depends on who’s being gatekept and to what extent.
Some artists are vultures who want to take advantage of culture without respecting it or considering what’s best for it.
However, if you keep out everything left of center, the music never develops and gets better.
I say it’s a judgement call for each new artist if they should be gatekept

Agreed. Many people have came along from different backgrounds with the proper respect and understanding without having to face those type of criticisms

Good point. His voice just so limited to me the songs I’ve heard were all gospely they all blended but tbf I haven’t listened to a full project by him

Overall regardless of genre there is always an established history there and I think hardcore fans of those respective genres just appreciate when “outsiders” show that general respect towards it

I remember reading blogs back in the day about country fans being pissed at Taylor Swift being considered a country artist, claiming she was Pop and that she sold out after her debut.

Yeah it seems like artists who kind of transcend a specific genre (like her and Drake) get that criticism often. Can’t speak for her but I know Drake was raised on hip hop and has historically shown respect for it which is why I never felt that way towards him. Comes with the territory though lol. It’s a fickle conversation that can easily be blurred by other issues people have with said artist outside of the original conversation

    Yep.

I'd include Beyonce in the R&B community too.

There's still mad R&B fans including those I met irl who think Beyonce "fell off" or sold out after DC and will say Mary J is better than her.

It’s sad. Nobody is without their flaws but I don’t like to see legends being torn down completely. Things that are tangibly happening in the moment for sure we can criticize but it takes a lot for me to outright change someone’s legacy in my mind

How is country music running rn?

Way more simple and of a certain aesthetic. I don’t understand how it’s racism when Beyoncé is snubbed when Shaboozey was welcomed with open arms

Jelly Roll, by the way, has like 10+ hip hop projects on Apple Music and has been sweeping up awards at the CMAs

    Isn’t Shaboozey still a rapper?

Shaboozey rubbed shoulders with people in Nashville, that’s kinda how you succeed in country music

Post Malone and Beyoncé did not do the same route at all. Post networked himself, bey sent people to network for her.
