    Does modern day rap really "bump in the whip" harder than older rap? After a whip test, the answer is... (80s not eligible for this thread)

    90s' styles:

    2000s:

    2010s:

    2020s..TBD

    I'll give 90's production the whip test title. NOTHING to this day bumps harder than hard 90s production. 2010s a bit too 808's heavy and every "hard" beat sounds the same. Though I'll give the 2010s the title of best overall(diversity of production, more influences) and 2000s the worst of the 3. Drums took a bit of a back seat during the 2000s (Neptunes and Kanye influence). 2000s rap/vocal performance might've been the strongest out of the 3--with the 10s being a wasteland of wasted beats smh. 90s best combination of great raps over great beats.

    90s=10s>>>>>2000s production wise.

    Yea sounds weird but the 2000s was the most joyful time in hip hop. Beats were sunny, more pop influenced. People were making happier music. 2010s the “make that s*** dark” era and the 90s are just legit hard af in and out of studios lol

    Crunk era was crazy tho

  • Feb 16, 2023

    I would say the 10s but the 20s been kinda stagnant

    90’s because those drums had soul to them. Even if they were played on an MPC or they just straight up sampled the drum break instead of chopping it up. Boom Bap had character to it and even to this day when used right it works so good. @op the neptunes had hard ass drums bruh lol. Kanye struggled with those. But anyways Havoc’s drum are so impeccable. I can see why Kanye wanted to emulate him or Pharrell but Q-Tip’s drums are something else also.

    90s production came from the heart and had the most variety but 10s were when students of the game began mastering the commercial and experimental sounds to a science - big credit to Kendrick, Wocka Flocka, Tyler and ASAP Rocky for that. 20s feel like we’re in another decade of experimentation so far, which could be attributed to the ever expanding and accessible industry of music.

    Neptunes drums hit but the beats were usually more poppy, especially the hits back then. Whereas 90s drums just felt raw af

    2010s for the variety

    Then 90s for the quality, but not much variety

    Then 2000s because a lotta mainstream production sounded very cheap
