I feel like certain artists are tarnishing their legacy/discography in hip hop.

Like for example Kanye had a great run from his first album The College Dropout to Ye/JIK but all the stuff he’s done in between has tarnished his music. As people now remember him more for the stuff he’s said or done rather than the albums came after that. It’s like he’s crumbling his image. Not taking away what he’s done outside of music (fashion/business) which is huge.

Same with The Game another artist who had a great run in albums and quality. Seems like he’s being remembered for stuff he’s said or done and isn’t music related no more.

Even in general like more artists now don’t care on the albums they release. It seems so sloppy the way is been put together. Who else can you think off?

Can't put it on The Culture it's just rappers aging and continuing to release music sometimes it works and sometimes they lost their flair

There’s no such thing as tarnishing your discography. Almost every legend has mid/bad projects

  • Aug 18, 2022

Donda & KSG are better than Ye & JIK

Fr Prince has like 20 and people suck and swallow him daily here

No knock on Princes he’s still a goat I think people just forget/have never listened to most of the duds in heralded artists discogs

It should be fine, very rarely are musical legacies actually tarnished

I hate how Kanye has handled his album releases since TLOP. I only like 2 songs on JIK. Donda was a mess. Donda 2 no comment. And it doesn’t help he’s been such a d*** head lately. He’s definitely tarnishing his legacy.

But honestly social media in general is tarnishing a lot of legacies. We have more access to celebs than ever before and we are truly learning how corny a lot of these people really are.

Kanye has been past the rubicon of the bullshit outweighing the music quality since TLOP with brief exceptions in KSG and Donda imo, but his legacy still feels solid to me. Like no matter how much I find him just straight up unpleasant these days, TCD and 808s and Yeezus still exist. His impact on culture and hip-hop and music as a whole still exists.

I think short of committing crimes like R. Kelly or to a lesser degree Bassnectar in electronic circles, your legacy is solid no matter how much you “fall off” or even become unpalatable in your later years as long as the reason you came up in the first place remains strong. Chance is an example of where his s*** music is outweighing his old stuff simply because he never hit a peak that justifies how garbage he’s now become imo, but that’s rare.

  • that sht is just idol worship for the sake of it the music is the music they're both just humans with insane lives so they're weirdos . happens to a lot of celebs its just extra magnified cus tech proliferation

that’s because when they go out on top they get treated like andre 3000 and get excluded from top rapper conversations

The thing for me too is that Ye has always been like this. Look at the Katrina Telethon stuff. It's just that social media started becoming bigger so he had more of a direct outlet to his fans. If we had Twitter in 05 we would've seen the same stuff (imo)
