I interpret the removing of the savior mantle as an acknowledgment of his flaws and humanity. Like he realizes he’s kind of a piece of s*** sometimes and being the savior of the world isn’t something he can realistically do. That’s kind of the through line of the album IMO. Maybe I’m wrong.
One point I want to make as someone who has been in counseling for years and has cheated: any good counselor is going to make you consider why you made the choice you did rather than judge you for that decision. I hate what I did and who I was but I also reflected on why it happened so I can live up to my own ideals in the future.
Idk why Kendrick chose to frame cheating as a larger generational issue but I think he’s probably done his part to atone with this wife and realistically that’s all that matters.
Why did I write so much about this s*** lol
I've seen some of your posts on here before, I think the album strikes a chord with you. And I agree with the first paragraph of this post, Kendrick was exposing his flaws because he doesn't want to be looked at as this savior of rap anymore. But other than a line or two in Crown, he doesn't even really acknowledge the role he's played in people placing that mantle on him. I think he expected people to care a lot more about his cheating and ruining this image people had of him, hence the crown of thorns. But he also comes at Noname on Mirror when she wasn't entirely wrong about him and Cole
There's so many contradictions and he doesn't make it clear enough if it's intentional. Plus he didn't do any interviews to provide more clarity. The messaging of the album is just a mess
I'm sure Kendrick and Whitney are good but he chose to let us in on this album. Imagine you told your wife the reason for you cheating is your mom being molested and slavery That's insulting af, like you said it's HIS choices. But I don't get him acknowledging this enough on the album imo

It does strike a chord with me and I think that's why I'm so lenient on its inconsistent messaging. Without stating exactly why Kendrick gave us an album in such a philosophically embryonic state, it definitely does seem like the kind of album that was made by a guy who is still figuring things out and just gave us what he had at the time.
There's that line in Worldwide Steppers about his writer's block. I think the Noname stuff broke something in him and that, along with what he was talking about in therapy and, to a lesser extent, Kodak's legal troubles, brought up a lot of interesting themes (freedom, generational trauma, cancel culture, the savior complex) with no clear ideology to go along with them. I think he's still working on what that is.
It's an interesting album because most rappers don't let us get that close, and the ones that do choose their words and viewpoints very carefully. Kendrick seems like a total mess right now and he was OK with us seeing him that way. I can't say I know too many albums as weird and conflicted as that one, at least outside of Kanye's discography.
None of this is a value judgment. I'm not saying any of this makes the album good or bad. I like it because I like the music on it. But it's more resonant for me in bits and pieces rather than as a whole because it's all over the place lyrically.

I just wish he'd take more responsibility because a lot of the album feels like he's still deflecting and placing blame on others. The "I said I might be racist" nonsequitur was appropriate on Worldwide Steppers, but Mother I Sober is supposed to be the turning point and he's still not doing enough imo. It's like what Kanye said on his first Drink Champs interview about the redemption part when he was discussing Drake's music. I feel like Kendrick tried, but it still comes across as pointing the finger everywhere but towards the mirror. This may have been intentional, but he could've done more to nail that home if that's the case. That's why I feel like this album really would've benefitted from interviews
It is a really important message. But he also still could've rapped and made more listenable music. Denzel delivered an album dealing with similar themes and still had bars. I'm not going to give the album more praise than it deserves just because it's Kendrick. The album has a lot of flaws and could've been better
The 5 year wait backfired. Kendrick needs to stop overthinking it and just cook up some quick heat for the streets
lol he cant do it, thats the point
lol he cant do it, thats the point
Some people were saying the same thing about Drake up until like 50 hours ago. Kendrick already delivered at least 2 unanimous classics, he could make another one for sure

drake consistently drops music. kendrick doesnt because if he tried to drop at the same rate it would sound like s***

Yeah because Drake been dropping GKMC/TPAB tier projects everytime🙄 Her Loss is being seen as Drake's best since like 2015 by many. Dropping consistently isn't necessarily better if you're dropping consistent dookie

lol
singles, features, remixes, projects. drake is there every year dropping heat and moments. kendrick cant do it. drake has classics so your point is dumb anyway

If Kendrick dropped consistently it would sound s*** is your point. Drake been dropping projects consistently and the consensus is that he has been sounding uninspired and dropping mid for years. So..
The classics you're speaking of was 6+ years ago btw. You're disproving your own point

Her Loss is pretty solid but HN is still almost unlistenable garbage
Morals clears both easily

source: I made it the f*** up
There's no comparing the 2
Drake doing things Kendrick never done and he's still playing catch-up
Drop a vulnerable album and go a world tour? Drake did that in 2011
Drop 2 albums in different genres in one year? Kendrick could only hope
Kendrick tbh.
Dropped an amazing album and really got some personal demons out of the way.
Like for him that wasn't just an album, he went through some s*** and had to get it off his chest.
Still had a successful run and a very successful tour.
Drake just did the same thing he always does. Put out some combination of singing or rapping. He just dug deeper into sub genres for those.
He went way into house music and then went back to trap.
It's cool. Literally not hating on it. (Honestly nevermind was ass though)
But he didn't really create a big experience or anything. It felt like business as usual with. A bit of a twist.
