think fieros are known for randomly catching on fire

Thats the gen 1 ones of the 80s, the gen 2 ones of the 90s are fixed and what i posted.

This is the gen 1 ones:

The gen 1 ones look better imo (although i still like the look of gen 2s) but yeah 20 percent of total production of them gen 1s have caught fire which is an astronomical amount of failure in the car world lmfao.

S*** almost ruined Pontiac before its official death in early 2010s.

Thats why im trying to stay domestic for my first real project 💀

I love the E30 tho one of my favs along with their old ass super car of the 70s n 80s, the original M1

I like the 850i as well. I always thought that was a sleeker design than the m1. Performance is most likely different.

I hear ya on staying domestic. Car culture is dope af.

    Official Car Thread!

    What finna tryin do:

Im in USA and thinking about getting into track racing here n there locally in my city and the next one over for fun.

I only know people that street race or drag lol. So, not very much technical or "legit" racers. Im into Track & Rally racing, but wanna start with track cuz rally is even more expensive & F***ING SCARY lmao.

Anyways, i wanted to know the opinion on these 3 cars for track racing. I found at least one example of each that i want. Theyre all American tho since i live in USA its easier and cheaper to get a car in the country of origin, for stuff such as parts, repairs, advice & info etc. So i dont have to worry about beating it up, upgrading & getting information.

They are 90s cars, getting them used (ofc) with a budget of $4000 to $10,000 for the car itself in full, mixed of performance plus looks, dont care if Manual or Auto but prefer Manual & high miles dont matter except a cheaper car lol. Idk when i will fully pull the trigger tho, but here's cars im looking at in the order im mostly excited for atm (the colors of the picture is the color of the found main examples im looking to actually buy):

    1. 1993 Ford Mustang GT Foxbody Convertible 5.0 auto drive (this one i almost bought already):

Mine is soft top convertible as mentioned above tho, but cant find any pics with the soft top up on google lol:

    2. 1991 Chevy Camaro RS 350 V6 5 Speed Manual (would want to put a v8 in it at some point, especially if i want to drag it):

    3. Chevrolet Corvette C4 V8 5.7 1994 auto (this is the car i looked at the most, the 80s to 90s c4 ones):

I would also wanna throw a body kit on this mane and repaint it if i could, which would cost me a good few more grand but would be so heat

Anyways these are my choices im looking at. I genuinely like all 3 of these cars and any help or advice is appreciated from maintenance, realiability, peeformance or personal experience etc.!

If you want to race sign up for autocross and you’ll learn very fast.

If you wanted a dedicated and competitive platform for the track I would go for a Miata, RX8, or C5 .

Those three cars are usually in the top 1% of autocross national championships in their class.

A fully modded RX8 will go toe to toe with an S2000, and cost literally a fraction of the price. RX8 isn’t as reliable but it’s a bargain track car. C5 and Miata also dominate their respective classes on the track.

If you’re dead set on a muscle car then the cat fish camaro will be the most competitive for a 90s muscle car setup. There was a catfish that was in top 10 in the national championship if that matters.

These cars dominate their class for around $10k

    RX8
Pros: Extremely competitive car, dominates in certain race classes. When modded , will perform just as good if not better than an S2000 in terms of handling for a literal fraction of the price. Fun to drive. Easy to push it to it’s limits, predictable when pushed to its limits.
Cons: Expensive to maintain, bad mileage, not reliable due it being a high performance engine tuned to it’s very limits.

    NB Miata
Pros: Extremely competitive in its classes, they literally dominate autocross. Can go toe to toe with S2000 for the fraction of the price. Cheap to maintain for a sports car. Short wheelbase. Extremely fun to drive.
Cons: Lacks the rigidity of the RX8 due to it being a roadster.

    4th Gen Camaro
Pros: The only 90s muscle car to mark it to the top 10 in a national championship. Handles really well when modded for suspension upgrades. Motor is extremely reliable, engine can be modified to make a dangerous amount of power. Competitive in its class. Looks like a catfish.

Cons: Some people are intimidated by the it’s looks. (Who would want to lose the catfish of death?)

Interesting and thanks for the in depth answer.

I know of auto cross but havent looked into it nor know anyone in it if im not mistaken, but i know they exist here locally (im in AZ Tucson to Phoenix areas, originally lived in CA bayarea) and should be easy to sign up.

The catfish 4th gen Camaro is my least fav tbh, but just in looks. The 3rd gen is my fav along with the 1st, 2nd & the modern 5th is ok but i dont like the look of 4th.

I have heard the C5 vette is really good too and you can get a early pop up headlights versions in decent shape for 8 to 12 grand now adays. I just ignored it tho cuz its a bit out of my budget where you can get a great example of a c4 for the price of an eh to decent c5, & c4s are also going up a bit so it can also flip into an investment as well if i wanted 🤔

I want to stay domestic USA since its just just cheaper and easier all the way around, especially for my first project car. Almost all US performance cars are Muscle based, or super car based that are way too expensive of course for me (there are a few rally and few pure sports cars too of USA but not much).

The 90s & onward tho is when US muscle cars started to be able to do more than go in a straight line thankfully. Starting with the c4 vette of the late 80s starting the trend mostly.

Looks wise i like the 3rd gen Camaro the most, but performance wise i like Foxbody Mustang the best (out of my list).

Im happy with any 3 and genuinely like them all, but I think Foxbody is the best to go. Its able to do it all, drag, circuit & drift, all really well & it was a good circuit car back in the day too.

I will look into Auto Cross locally tho, research cars for Auto Cross & see the opinion/results/builds of the cars Im looking at. That's a really good suggestion.

Will keep c5 (and 4th gen camaro) in the back of my mind too. Although a bit out of budget & especially after upgrades n all that, but u never know.

Im too tall for a Miata tho (im 6'2") & RX7s n 8s are a mess sadly, love the look of the 8 tho.

In terms of looks, yes the catfish isn’t gonna win a beauty pageant, but if you’re very serious about racing, it outclasses all other 90s muscle on the track, and the only 90s muscle to make it to championships. Only thing that comes close to it is a barebones Notchback Foxbody. The thing is though…. that the Notchback Stang is ugly af.

For some reason all the ugly cars perform the best 😭.

Whichever car you get though get the one in best condition, cuz you will have to replace a lot of stuff to get it up to spec for racing.

I agree that the Jack of all trades is the foxbody, has aftermarket support for massive power upgrades. But it also has a lot of support for suspension and handling too. I also believe the 302 engine sounds the best 😉. I’m kinda biast towards Ford lol

Never buy a Lincoln new but after a year+ theyre a steal

Jeremy Clarkson was amazed by the RX8 stating it was very fun to drive and that “no matter how hard I try I can’t get this damn thing to spin out.” Praising it’s predictable and stable handling. Saying the RX8 can make “bad drivers look decent”. I also admire the rx8. I want one bad lol.

I def agree with all this. So far 90s GT Fox is on top of my list since it seems to hit all the spots AND i like it looks wise lmao, we'll see tho. Its gonna be like a years process getting my money right, sourcing (i got ppl in CA keeping an eye out for me while im looking in AZ) a good example (i dont want to restore or get someone else half finished project car) that isnt over priced, then going through the basic detailing & tuning.

Whenever i buy the car and get it in my hands this or hopefully sometime next year I'll update the thread too!
