    Drake killed hip hop

artists used to put a lot more effort and experiment more on music

than Drake just comes in making the most generic music imaginable and kills. Taught rappers to never try again.

i just wanna know how drake is generic

There’s a portion of this site that I’m talking about obviously not all members but I’m talking people who make complaint threads on the daily

i assume that’s honestly gotta be either people wanting engagement on their posts to bs or just poorly worded attempts to start a discussion

    i see tho

50 Cent and Jay-Z popularized it.

Jay stans kept using sales and hits as a way for not accepting his L with Nas.

And he made the phrase "Men lie, women lie, numbers don't " famous, which was ironically a sub at 50

And 50 blew up making quoting Soundscan numbers and would make videos like this:

Then, when 50 lost to Kanye, people started to see sales as an indication of what direction rap was headed since rap really did change after Kanye won.

Hip Hop never been the same since.

i think a lot of ppl here weren't around for those 50 videos lol.

The point I’m making is that you can still find threads on her about non-mainstream music, if mfs don’t tune in that’s on them, but its there

hows he not generic? Man started his career tryna just make watered down 808s Kanye stuff, then tried to hybridize it with washed Wayne stuff. Then he just tried to sound like a more boring Future with SFTB. Then he just tried to make the most boring version of dancehall stuff imaginable (borderline made Popcaan someone worth listening to instead)

now he just copy whatever trend is popping

Did you hide your top artists so no one can roast you for them?

  • May 15, 2021

because the 808s influence is there but it doesn't sound like watered down 808s at all lol it's more like a progression of that sound mixed with r&b to create a new feel

  • May 15, 2021

50 did tbh but also drake stans play a huge part now of continuing that narrative

  • May 15, 2021

The 50 vs Kanye sales competition narrative that was pushed for Grad v Curtis definitely was a tipping point

I can agree to this too

If all this was the case, Jadakiss would've never had a career.

To be one of the rappers who's prime was in an era that literally anybody and they mama was getting a platinum album (Even f***ing Tony Yayo). If that mattered, how come rappers that barely was going gold in that era still had careers?

That’s a dumb argument because sales clearly matter now and there are hella rappers who aren’t selling who are still popular. Thug was flopping for years when sales mattered and that didn’t stop his career at all, but since you bring up Jadakiss

Jadakiss was beefing with 50 Cent and had to consistently defend his record sales because that was the biggest thing 50 had over him, “You might sell more records than me but in the streets you’ll always be second to me” because sales mattered, he wouldn’t even have to have said that if they didn’t

But regardless that’s a dumb argument because I never said sales were make or break, but sales absolutely did come up in discussions of rappers before Drake. That’s not my opinion, I literally lived it and am giving you multiple examples but you are one of the most stubborn people to disagree with so you’ll probably somehow find a way to keep disagreeing

what are you expecting though like those artists aren’t popular so obviously a lesser portion of people are going to discuss them

It's weird cause other than pop, don't think any other genre has ever been as concerned/focused on sales as internet rap fans have been last 5-6 years. I've never heard any rock fan tell me anything about sales. Don't recall any hip hop conversation, other than Grad vs Curtis, being about sales until last 5-6 years. Even my local latin music, they brag about sales but fans don't talk about that unless they're super stans. Now a days you get into arguments over who's better in rap and stans bring out sales numbers
