I like the way things are now. Imagine a rapper hyping up a project for months just for it to be mid.

Kinda the point of a rollout,to create certain expectations of what your album will sound like and what’s the aesthetic of it. No need for that s*** now tho, everything is assembly line made, your gonna get exactly what you think your gonna get with every artist nowadays.

Playboi & Uzi are new examples of how anticipation for an album over a long period of time still works. But those situations were out of their control, and could’ve been perilous to the artist. And we’re still waiting for WLR anyway

i appreciate album rollouts but a lot of artists who still do it drag it out to long. like i don’t want four singles with no release date

Cause it’s not planned in the first place lol

  • May 12, 2020

Because if you don’t have a popping single, a long rollout doesn’t help contribute to anything worthwhile for the label

They’re spending money to not even recuperate on the first week and long term sales

Might as well get it out the way

  • May 12, 2020

The wait for WLR seemed fine at first now it just seems corny and Carti is trying too hard to be mysterious

That's honestly how I've felt about his whole personality for a while tbh

yeah it’s cool when everything is all planned out but i remember when people would announce the date and then say “oh we gotta push it back for sample clearance”. like you didn’t know the album had samples until a month before you drop lol?

They still are a thing you just don’t notice them anymore

    Artists drop singles

Once a single starts picking up steam and only then an album gets announced for a week or two away

The rollout still happens there’s just no album mentioned until the end of the rollout

I'm kidding before y'all roast me

  • May 12, 2020

Most of my favorite artists still do rollouts.

I believe they were turning in the albums to the label with a list of songs they sampled and the label would figure out how much it would take to clear them. If it’s reasonable, they’d pay it,if it’s out of the budget, they wouldn’t pay it unless you were willing too.

    Just my take

  • May 12, 2020

IGOR has one of my fav rollouts ever

  • May 12, 2020

I enjoy surprise drops or small rollouts. You get to experience the album with little to no expectations instead of having this long period of hype and promises that almost never end up being fulfilled

  • May 12, 2020

EA had a 3 year rollout wym

  • May 12, 2020

Fans don’t have patience. They don’t like to live with music anymore. They want the single today, album tomorrow, deluxe after that , mixtape next week

They are still a thing as they always were - it's just perceived differently nowadays because albums aren't announced from day one.

I guess, in a way you could say that isn't technically an album rollout because we don't know about the album beforehand, but that would be a stretch

Idk why this has changed tho, it can't be a new "strategy" as it's a proven fact that if a mainstream artist with a fanbase annouces an album with the lead single, that's better for an album's sales. My only guess could be that these artists aren't actually finishing albums before singles are released - which is a completely different problem

Ngl i kind of miss the anticipation months in advance with artists doing multiple interviews/late night tv shows etc and gaining insight into their thought process before listening to the album. Why do yall think that isnt a thing anymore? Is it solely because of streaming?
